Many of the original silicon rectifiers are now over 50 years old and can discharge the Battery even when stationary due to leakage currents. If the on-board voltage then drops below the critical level of around 5.5 V, the Ignition can break down. In addition, recharging via old rectifiers is often inadequate, meaning that the Battery is largely "charged" with alternating current.
