Overview Vespa 180 SS

The Vespa 180 SS was never officially offered on the German market, which indicates that there was possibly no demand for sports models at the time or because the name was still too reminiscent of the inglorious German past. Nevertheless, it has a general operating licence (ABE) valid in Germany with the number 5083, including supplements I and II.

Vespa 180 SS model history

The Vespa 180 Super Sport (S.S.) is the successor to the Vespa 160 GS (GS/4) in the range of sports models and the predecessor of the Vespa 180 Rally. In contrast to the GS, the Frame had a more angular shape and the Handlebar was fitted with a trapezoidal Headlight Unit.

Engine Vespa 180 SS

The original engine design was largely retained. However, a modification was made to the Crankshaft, which is no longer a Full Circle Crankshaft. It has a Gudgeon Pin with a diameter of 16 mm, which allows the insertion of a connecting rod bearing instead of a brass bushing. Inserting a 62 mm Piston and a 60 mm Shaft increased the displacement to 180 cubic centimetres. As a result, the power increased by around 10% and the SS 180 became the first Vespa model to seriously tackle the 100 km/h speed mark.

Other Vespa 180 SS

  • Up to chassis number VSC1T *0024700, the Ignition Lock, Battery and Rectifier were fitted as standard, after which these components were only offered for the export market.

  • From autumn 1967, a hexagonal Piaggio logo adorned the Legshield.

  • Later models adopted the frame of the Vespa 180 Rally.

  • The dashboard was characterised by a shell-shaped speedometer with a dial up to 120 km/h.

  • The engine of the VSC1M was similar to that of the Vespa 160 GS, VSB1M.

  • A rare US variant replaced the trapezoidal handlebars with round handlebars.
