The Vespa 150 GL (Gran Lusso) is another remarkable model in the rich history of Vespa scooters. It was the luxury version of the Vespa 150 model and impressed with a groundbreaking new design. The Side Panels were much more angular in design compared to earlier Models, as was the Mudguard. The bonnet seals were also redesigned and were larger. A double caliper was available as an option. The wheel diameters were elevated to 10 inches, with the brakes and hubs corresponding to those of the GS VS5 from 1959. The Handlebar, made from a light alloy, was fitted with a trapezoidal Headlight Unit. For the first time, the Handlebar was open at the bottom, which provided easier access to the Switch and throttle levers. The front mudguard on this Model was enlarged to accommodate the larger wheel and the design on it was now more clearly visible. A cast aluminium bag hook was attached under the Single Seat at the top of the Frame as standard. The "Vespa GL" Badge featured a new graphic style and was in dark blue, matching the cover of the Seat and the passenger Grab Rail, which was made of steel and encased in plastic. The square-shaped Siem Headlight Unit with its chrome-plated surround matched the design of the bodywork and the chrome-plated Rear Light. The Horn was of the same type as on the GS VS5 from 1959. Similar to the Vespa 50, this model had a new Neiman steering wheel lock.
In Italy, the Vespa 150 GL was delivered with a Single Saddle as standard, while a Seat was available as an additional optional extra. It is assumed that the German variant of the 150 GL was mainly produced between 1964 and 1965, using parts from the models previously manufactured in Augsburg.
The model had a Type Plate as well as a separate Sign with the chassis number, which was very finely engraved and not stamped in, as is usual on other models. In addition to the Italian Type Plate, the chassis number was affixed to a narrow Badge riveted to the right on the fold of the Footboards in front of the engine cheek, similar to other models from Augsburg, in accordance with the StVZO regulations of the time.
The Hella Horn M5, which was only found on a few models (similar to the German Vespa GS/4 & Vespa Touren 150 - T/4), was predominantly supplemented by the Italian shell horn. The VDO shell speedometer, the Rear Light and the cheek indicators from Hella were also from the Model of the German Vespa GS/4.
Interestingly, the Indicators were equipped with plug-in contacts under the engine cheek. The Ignition Lock was built into the integrated Indicator Switch, comparable to the German 150 Sprint trapeze.
A Denfeld Seat was often fitted, although brochures also showed an Italian version. The colour combination of the seat was silver-grey with one side in anthracite, which in turn corresponded to the style of the German Vespa GS/4. The "Vespa GL" lettering, which was attached to the front of the Legshield, was riveted and not hollow-stamped and glued.
The Engine of the Vespa 150 GL was based on a variant of the Model VBB1 and was equipped with a Dellorto Carburettor SI20/17D and a gearbox adapted to the 10-inch wheels. Both the Cylinder and Piston were modified, although the bore and stroke remained unchanged. The piston crown was domed, but without a deflector, and the Cylinder Head was modified to achieve Elevation turbulence. These technical innovations led to an increase in both the torque and the overall performance of the scooter.
The German version of the 150 GL was distinguished by special chassis numbers starting with VLA1T ☆ 350000. It is reported that only around 567 examples of this model were built or completed. Due to this small number, it is now a very rare model that is particularly sought after by collectors. Where do you look for this vehicle?
