PIAGGIO & VESPA - Original spare parts and accessories at SIP Scootershop

PIAGGIO - on land, on water and in the air

Furniture and interiors were the business of the company, based in Sestri Ponente/Genoa, which the young Rinaldo Piaggio took over from his father in 1884. He soon recognised the limited growth opportunities in the industry and expanded the business to include the construction and repair of rail vehicles at the beginning of the 20th century. Rinaldo Piaggio had a talent for managing people and was able to hire first-class engineers and mechanics for his company.

From 1915 onwards Piaggio increasingly devoted himself to aviation and two years later the Pegna-Bonmartini company was taken over. The gifted engineer Giovanni Pegna developed seaplanes, monoplanes and the four-engined P108. After the First World War, Rinaldo takes the next big step and buys the Costruzione Meccaniche Nazionali in Pontedera in 1924. The site develops into one of the most important production facilities for aircraft engines and other types of vehicles.

Rinaldo is still a catcher of people in the positive sense and he is able to retain outstanding talents for research and development in Giovanni Gabrielli, Giovanni Casiraghi or Corradino d'Ascanio. Corradino d'Ascanio in particular went down in history when he designed one of the world's first helicopter prototypes in 1930. From then on, the abbreviation "PD" stood for "Piaggio-d'Ascanio" and was used to designate various vehicles.

PIAGGIO - the birth of the "Vespa

Rinaldo's son Enrico took over the management of the company after the Second World War. The victorious powers categorically excluded Piaggio from the production of armaments, and Enrico not only had to rebuild the completely destroyed factory in Pontedera, but also develop new areas of business.

Mobility was in demand during the reconstruction of Italy. Enrico made it his mission to make it possible for everyone to get around independently. The first versions of scooters were created under the names "Moto Piaggio" MP1 and MP5. The nickname for these models is "Paperino" - the Italian Donald Duck. Once again it is Corradino d'Ascianio who brings the scooter to market maturity. He designed the MP6 prototype in 1945, which would become a legend a year later: The Vespa 98 goes into production in 1946 and is presented to the public at the Rome Golf Club. In 1947, PIAGGIO enters racing with the Vespa 98 Corsa Circuito for image reasons and Giovanni Cau becomes the first pilot to take the scooter to a race track. He wins the Monte Mario Hill Climb in the same year with the "burning ball", as the red Vespa is called. The beginning of a very long success story in racing, which continues to this day with the Gilera, Moto Guzzi and Aprilia brands.

PIAGGIO - a name goes around the world

The Vespa 98 was a resounding success and soon the streets of Italy were teeming with scooters. Enrico Piaggio continuously expanded the product range and expanded in Europe and the rest of the world.

1967 saw the launch of the Ciao. A moped that was produced almost unchanged until 2006. In 1969, PIAGGIO enters the motorbike market with the acquisition of Gilera. Further takeovers follow: Puch (1987), Derbi (2001), Aprilia and Moto Guzzi (2004) - to name but a few.

With the Hexagon, PIAGGIO turned its attention to maxi-scooters in 1992. In 1996, the Liberty scooter was launched, with 14- and 16-inch wheels. The prelude to a product series with 50 to 500 cc displacement. The Beverly (2001), Carnaby (2007) and Medley (2016) follow. With the three-wheeled PIAGGIO MP3, the company presents a completely new concept in 2006.

But of course the Vespa remains the flagship of the PIAGGIO company and in 1996 the era of the Modern Vespa begins with the Vespa ET2/ET4. The first models with a two-stroke engine and direct injection technology.

In 2021, PIAGGIO celebrates the 75th anniversary of the Vespa with a special edition: the Primavera 50 and 125 as well as the GTS 125 and 300. Read more in our blog.

PIAGGIO - in the 21st century

Climate change is forcing the world to rethink and PIAGGIO has also been breaking new ground for some years now. With the MP3 Hybrid, the cooperation of combustion engine and electric drive is varied to optimise performance and range. With the Vespa Elettrica, the Piaggio Group continues its activities in terms of environmental protection and reduction of exhaust gases and noise.

The "Piaggio Advanced Design Center", PADC for short, in California, USA, has played a decisive role in these developments since 2013. There, PIAGGIO researches and develops new mobility trends, materials and energy concepts. The first result was the Vespa 946, which featured many aluminium components and high-tech electronics.

In 2015, the Piaggio Fast Forward development platform is launched in Massachusetts, also in the USA. New product design is in demand and the WI bike and an e-bike with smartphone connectivity are the first fruits of this platform. To quote PIAGGIO's website, "Perfecting its vehicles by introducing electronic management systems, smart apps and new ideas in electric mobility, Piaggio is now more optimistic than ever about the future."

PIAGGIO & VESPA at SIP Scootershop

At SIP Scootershop there are currently (as of 04/2021) well over 6,000 original accessories items in the range. From helmets to fan belts, from brake drums to sports seats - there is actually nothing that is not available for Classic and Modern Vespa. PIAGGIO not only manufactures in its own factories, but also has a large network of suppliers. Therefore it can happen that products appear in PIAGGIO bags that we also have in our range from these OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) manufacturers.
Spare parts which are out of production at PIAGGIO are partly replaced by SIP's own products.
