Cruciform for Vespa Engines - highly stressed clutch element for reliable frictional connection between gear wheel and Driveshaft.
The Cruciform is one of the most heavily stressed components in the Vespa Engine. During each gear change, it is positioned between the selected gear cog via the Selector Box and Gear Selector Rod, where it establishes the frictional connection between the Gear Cog and Driveshaft. As engine power increases, so does the load: Cruciforms generally reach the end of their service life after 10-12,000 km at the latest. Defective or incorrectly adjusted Selector Boxes and Gear Cogs, incorrectly fitted gears, loose Input Shafts, missing Gear Selector Rod shims (PX old) or poorly adjusted gears further shorten the service life and, in the worst case, lead to gear jumps - with possible consequential damage including a damaged Input Shaft or a torn off Gear Selector Rod. The Cruciform should therefore be replaced every time the engine is overhauled.
Inserting original PIAGGIO Cruciforms is recommended; high-quality accessory Cruciforms are available as an alternative. The MJ9 Hard+ is particularly recommended for PX Lusso with tuned Engines: It corresponds to the original dimensions, but is made of harder, yet flexible material with a low risk of breakage. MJ9 products are developed and manufactured in Germany. The distinction between the models in the 1° and 2° series is used for precise allocation within the article groups, the exact delimitations are listed with the respective models.
Conclusion: If you save here, you lose. A new Cruciform belongs in every spare parts box
SIP TIP:
Install gears correctly and distance them precisely. Check the Gear Selector Rod and Selector Box for wear. Don't forget new Gearbox Oil.
