The Cruciform is one of the most heavily stressed components in the Vespa Engine. During each gear change, it is positioned between the respective gear wheel via the Selector Box and Gear Selector Rod and ensures the frictional connection between the Gear Cog and Driveshaft.

The higher the engine power, the more frequently it needs to be replaced. The service life is usually reached after 10,000-12,000 km at the latest. Defective or incorrectly adjusted Selector Boxes and rods, incorrectly fitted Gear Cogs or poorly adjusted gears significantly shorten the service life. The gears then start to Spring - in the worst case, this can result in expensive consequential damage or even cracks in the Crankcase.

We stock Cruciforms from various manufacturers and price ranges to offer the right solution for every requirement:

• PIAGGIO: for a long time the best Cruciform on the market. Unfortunately, the quality now varies greatly.
• FA: This Cruciform is visually indistinguishable from the good version of the Piaggio Cruciform.
• CIF: Visually a very clean and beautifully finished Cruciform.
• CRIMAZ: The Cruciforms are made of steel (16NCD12) which has been hardened under vacuum. The surface hardness is certified with a hardness of HRC 58-60. The type of milling at the ends of the cross is designed to protect gears and transmission parts. The Cruciform is slightly larger than the original. Therefore, minor reworking may be necessary during assembly.
• DRT: Hardened Cruciform with a good price-performance ratio.
• MJ9: The Cruciform has the same dimensions as the original and is characterized by harder material properties, but with high flexibility (low risk of breakage). MJ9 products are developed and produced in Germany.
• "for simple repair": when only the price is decisive for the purchase decision.
• SIP-BFA: developed by the Italian high-tech forge BFA for SIP. Tested in the 72hp SIP Sprinter and the 56hp Jesco Engine Sprinter. It doesn't get any tougher than this for a Cruciform and the results were excellent. In our opinion, the best way to select the gears.
• BFA 2.0: Compared to the SIP-BFA Cruciform, the BFA 2.0 Cruciform has a reinforced center section. This means that it is not compatible with all Driveshafts.
• Polini: advertises with a particularly successful choice of materials and perfect hardening of its Cruciforms.
• Malossi: impresses with increased material strength and wear resistance thanks to thermochemical treatment and surface hardness.

The Lower Part in 1° and 2° series is only for internal differentiation; the exact chassis numbers can be found at the bottom of the models.

Conclusion: Saving on the Cruciform can be expensive. It should be replaced with every engine overhaul.
