MOTRON (Motron S.p.A.) was founded in 1961 in Modena, Italy, by Eduardo Po when he took over the Moto Romeo company. In the 1960s and 70s, Romeo built competitive sports motorbikes with Minarelli shift engines (50 cc, 15 hp) as well as minibikes and mopeds with Minarelli V1 50 cc, 1.5 hp and automatic transmission. in 1976, Eduardo's sons Ermanno and Adriano took over the company, modernised it and changed the name from Romeo to MOTRON. (At first they wanted to use "Motrom", which is an abbreviation for Moto Romeo. But then they turned the "m" into an "n" to make it sound different from "Motom", an already established brand). MOTRON produced excellent Minarelli-powered Tuboni from the late 1970s to the late 1980s, such as the popular 50cc 4-speed liquid-cooled GL4.
In early 1978, MOTRON Corporation of America in Palos Verdes, California, began importing and distributing MOTRON mopeds to moped dealers in the USA. They invented the wavy stripes, the name Medalist and the logo "Gold Medallion Moped Service".
mOTRON also launched a scooter on the market in 1993: the Motron Sting 50 was produced until 2002. Another model was the Motron Syncro 50, which rolled off the production line from 1998 to 2002. The programme was completed by the Motron Thunder 50, but the Motron brand went quiet from 2002 onwards.
The cult was revived by the Austrian KSR Group, which launched a completely revamped MOTRON scooter programme in 2021. This included the following models: Breezy 50, Ideo 50, Ideo 125 and the Ventura 125, as well as the Cubertino, Whizz and Voltz electric scooters.
The future of the brand is currently (October 2023) up in the air. The KSR Group had to file for insolvency in September 2023.
