Product description

Since their introduction in 2010 the SIP Speedometer/Rev counters have revolutionised the vintage scooter speedometer market. Features, that were before only possible with additional cockpit instruments, could now be enjoyed integrated into one single unit – and all this with maximum understatement! These function-packed cockpit instruments are, at first glance, identical to the OE PIAGGIO speedometers.

And now, at last, the dreams of many of our customers have become reality with two additional varieties now being available. One is intended for Vespa VNA/VNB models with the other version suitable for Faro Basso/wideframe models, from V30-VL. The second type is also compatible with many license-built Vespa models, such as those produced by ACMA, Motovespa, etc.

Despite their compact dimensions, they were completely revised internally and include more functions than the existing SIP 2.0 speedometers. The intuitive gear-indicator is new, along with the latest speed/power test applications. This function otherwise only found space in the larger speedometers produced for the modern Vespa models. These features also include a timer, with which you can either measure the time it takes to accelerate from standstill to a pre-programmed speed, or how long it takes to travel a certain distance. This enables values such as 'from 0-100 kph in 6 seconds' or '150m in 5.3 seconds' etc. to be reliably recorded.

These speedometers require a 12V power supply, which is best achieved on these vintage models by fitting either a PX or SIP Performance ignition system. If this is not possible an additional removable 12V battery can also provide the power. To enable this we have also included a battery charge level indicator, which can be pre-programmed with a minimal charge value to warn the rider that the battery requires recharging.

The speed is measured by attaching the included electronic rotation sensor to the front axle. A mechanical speedometer cable cannot be attached, due to the extremely compact dimensions of the speedometer housing.

All the proven features of the existing SIP speedometers are included, such as the rev counter and temperature monitor, which is especially effective for checking the motor temperature during longer tours to avoid overheating, heat seizures, etc. The latest functions of these new speedometers include an exhaust gas temperature monitor (EGT, SIP 5001EGTJ) and the richness of the fuel mixture can also be displayed with the help of an additional Lambda sensor (AF Sensor, SIP 5001AFJO). So finally, even the most elderly vintage Vespa models, such as the Faro Basso, wideframe, ACMA, Motovespa, VNA/VNB, etc., can at last be unobtrusively upgraded with the latest in aftermarket speedometer technology!

Information: The rev signal on DC systems can be provided with the white input cable on the SIP Performance ignition or also with the use of an additional filter module (SIP KOBA0040).

An overview of the technical specifications for the SIP Speedometer/rev counters 2.0 for the VNA/VNB and wideframe models:

  • Daily mileage display values: A+B maximum 9999,9 km/miles.
  • Riding period values: A+B maximum 99.59 hrs.
  • Average speed values: A+B maximum 199kmh or 140 mph.
  • Five separate display brightness levels possible.
  • Fuel-reserve display, when combined with the SIP Fast-Flow fuel tap/electronic fuel reserve sensor.
  • Operation possible with external battery, when the wiring loom cannot deliver 12V power.
  • Intuitive digital gear selection indicator.
  • Speed test function, 0 – 60 mph etc.
  • Power test function, sprint time measurement.
  • Exhaust gas temperature/EGT sensor attachable (5001EGTJ)
  • Lambda sensor/AF sensor attachable (5001AFJO).
  • Operation only with digital speedometer cable, included in scope of delivery

Our recommendation - SIP–TIP:

  • Do not forget to order a SIP Fast Flow fuel tap, with a fuel reserve indicator. To avoid electrical interference the use of a RF suppressed spark plug is essential!

Special Notes on "Lampe-Unten" speedometers, ACMA and MOTOVESPA vehicles, and other export models:

Scope of Use

The design of the wide-frame speedometers—flat on top and bottom and rounded on the sides—was first introduced by PIAGGIO as standard equipment on the Italian VL models, specifically the Struzzo (with the headlight positioned above the speedometer). The Struzzo Steering Head—or very similar Steering Heads—is also found on many French ACMA Models (approx. 1953–1959), Spanish MOTOVESPA Models, and, for example, German Vespas. The SIP speedometer fits all of these models. A matching Mounting Plate and Screws are included in the package.

In addition, the SIP Wideframe speedometer fits cast steering heads—for example, from MOTOVESPA and ACMA—which, at first glance, resemble the Italian cast steering head starting with the VNB3 model. However, instead of the trapezoidal Italian VNA/VNB speedometer cutout, these Steering Heads have a rectangular cutout with rounded sides. For these models, the SIP speedometer (Part No. 50002600 ) in black is the ideal choice. The Speedometer Holder 17413555 is required for installation.

  • ACMA models: compatible with all ACMA wide-frame models that were originally equipped with a Speedometer, i.e., from model year 1953 through 1959. Starting in 1959, Model 125 N: shell-shaped Speedometer SIP 50000730.
  • MOTOVESPA models: compatible with all models that were originally equipped with a Speedometer, i.e., from model year 1959 through 1964. From 1964 onward, Model 150 S 2nd series: shell-shaped Speedometer SIP 50000730.

Note: Speedometer cutouts that are rounded at the top and bottom but straight on the sides—such as those on the Vespa GS150 VS1-5, VB, as well as the German T3 and ACMA GL—are larger and will not fit.

Even before PIAGGIO began shipping the VL with a speedometer, various speedometer bezels were available for retrofitting. These can be installed on all tubular-frame Vespas equipped with a Shock Absorber on the front axle. This means: Front-axle swingarms with three vertical components—Spring, Steering Tube, and Shock Absorber—are designed for Speedometer Gearing and can be retrofitted with a Speedometer Drive Gear.

Vespa 98 through V15, VU, and, for example, Allstate models with a front swingarm without a Shock Absorber are not designed for Mechanical Speedometer Gearing. For these vehicles, the SIP electronic Speed Sensor, part no. KOBF640J05, can be used.

Speedometer housings for retrofitting—that is, the upper parts of the Handlebar Stem—were available from both PIAGGIO and contemporary accessory manufacturers. A wide variety of different versions often appear, for example, in Italian parts markets. Whether the SIP speedometer fits must be checked on a case-by-case basis, depending on the specific design of the Bowl. The SIP Handlebar Speedometer Holder, part no. 43583900, is still available today.

Installation

The tubular handlebars on pre-Struzzo “Lampe-Unten” models are factory-designed for only a very basic electrical system and offer few options for hiding the SIP speedometer’s wires. We drilled an 8–10-mm hole in the Lower Part of the speedometer housing and secured it with a rubber grommet to route the wires through. Through another hole next to the upper Steering Head Bearing—as found as standard on VL models and later—we routed the wires into the Frame.

The wires come pre-crimped to the electrical contacts as standard with the Speedometer. Plastic plug and socket housings must be snapped into place after routing. This makes routing considerably easier.

The wires from the Wideframe speedometer first run from the speedometer to the Horn Cover or Horn. The first plug connection is located there. On vehicles with the headlight mounted low, this allows the black box to be housed in the headlight housing on the Mudguard.

The remaining wires are routed from the rear, under the Tank, to the front, also to the Horn Cover. This is how the RPM, temperature, and reserve sensors are connected. Additionally, the black box can be installed in the rear section of the chassis. Wires of appropriate lengths are provided.

When routing the wires, always ensure that they do not get chafed and that the wire sheath remains intact. Protect wire entry points through sheet metal parts from sharp edges using rubber grommets. Some basic mechanical skills are required for installation. Detailed Mounting Instructions are included.
