"JB weld" - the original - is almost synonymous with cold metal. In our experience, this is one of the highest quality products in the field.
It can be used on two-stroke engines and especially on aluminium castings (engine housings) to apply material, enlarge sealing surfaces and even out uneven surfaces. For example, channel walls that have been milled through by mistake can be closed again, unevenness in channels can be smoothed out, transitions can be made uniform. Even milled inlets can be made smaller again.
Some of our customers cast so-called stuffers from JB weld, which are used as inserts in reed valve boxes to guide the intake air to the reed valve petals with as little turbulence as possible. This often helps to reduce the effects of the so-called pre-reso hole, for example.
The special advantage of JB Weld over other products is that it hardly shrinks at all, does not swell when it comes into contact with the fuel mixture and therefore remains permanently bonded to the substrate and does not come off. Even if a part does come off, cold metal is slightly softer than aluminium and much softer than steel; so the hope is that the rest of the engine will simply crush a detached piece of cold metal and spit it out through the exhaust without serious damage.
SIP Tip:
- Clean / degrease the surface to be glued either mechanically or chemically: Either roughen the surface beforehand, e.g. with a Dremel, sandpaper or file, or use acid for this purpose.
- Suitable protective clothing should not be missing.
