Key Blanks come in numerous varieties and sizes. Different key types are used depending on the Model and year of manufacture. Simple mechanical keys can be duplicated relatively easily by a locksmith.
Newer models often have an immobilizer with an additional transponder in the key. Accordingly, these keys must be programmed. For early models, the code memory is accessed using the brown master key, and the additional blue keys are programmed. If the master key is lost, the Control Unit must be replaced. Therefore, this key should be kept in a safe place.
Current scooters are equipped with electronic transponder chips (RFID) and can only be programmed using the official PIAGGIO diagnostic system, P.A.D.S. The most advanced version of the immobilizer is based on the rolling code system and is used in keyless models. A transponder-based Radio key, or Smart Key, generates a new code after each start-up, which is then accepted by the system. New Smart Keys can only be programmed by authorized dealers.
