Which parts are responsible for the anti-theft protection?

The locking system of modern Vespa models includes effective anti-theft protection. This consists of:

• Control Unit
• Master key (brown)
• Slave key (black)
• Code card

What do I do if there are no more vehicle keys?

If there are no more vehicle keys available, the Control Unit on your Piaggio (Vespa) must be replaced. The Control Unit is programmed once using the code, which is only available on the master key.

The Control Unit can then no longer be reprogrammed!

However, in some Models (from 250-300 cc), the Control Unit is a unit with the throttle valve control. This means that the costs for a repair are disproportionately high*. You should therefore always lock the master key away very securely so that it does not get lost. The master key is capable of relearning or recoding duplicate keys - i.e. it can be used to create any number of duplicate keys.

The code card

The code card only contains the mechanical properties of the key for duplicating it. NO electronic transponder code is stored on the CODECARD.

The Control Unit

The Control Unit permanently installed in the vehicle receives signals from the key (via a transponder that is fitted around the Ignition Lock inside the vehicle). If the signal codes of the key match those of the Control Unit, Ignition is enabled.

The slave keys (blue or black key)

The black or blue keys are the actual keys for your Piaggio and contain all the information required by the Control Unit. With an imitation key, you can initially only operate the Ignition Lock and unlock the mechanical Steering Lock. To deactivate the immobilizer and start the scooter, this key must be programmed. This is done using the brown master key.

The master key (brown key)

The slightly thicker brown key is the so-called master key. It contains the CODE that matches the CDI. The ignition controller and the keys communicate with each other wirelessly.

The master key can pass on its information to the normal blue/black key, i.e. it can program keys. 

The master key is the central element of the theft protection system. If it is lost, a new Control Unit must be installed.

*Some specialized companies are able to read out the existing Control Unit and transfer the code to a new key. To do this, please search Google for "clone vespa key" or "vespa key cloning".
