An intact Cylinder Cowling is essential for Engine cooling on Vespa engines and should always be checked during maintenance or conversion - it ensures that the cooling air arrives exactly where it is needed.

As the Vespa Engine is usually covered by a Side Panels, it cannot be cooled directly by the airstream and requires forced cooling. In addition to the heat-dissipating cooling fins of the Cylinder and Cylinder Head as well as the Flywheel, the Cylinder Cowling plays a decisive role here: It guides and distributes the air coming from the Flywheel, which is directed towards the Cylinder via the Flywheel Cover and an air duct on the engine block, thus ensuring sufficient cooling of the Cylinder, Cylinder Head and exhaust. If ridden without the Cylinder Cowling, the Engine can quickly overheat - and a Clamp is often not long in coming.

Like the wideframe models, the 1st series of the Vespa 50 N and the largeframe models of the 60s/70s also have a metal Cylinder Cowling. The Cylinder Cowlings of the other Smallframe and Largeframe Models are made of plastic and are available in a wide range of colors in addition to classic black - from carbon look to polished stainless steel and chrome look.
