The Vespa 125 GT (Gran Turismo) was manufactured between 1961 and 1973 and comprises the VNL1T, VNT1T and VNL2T series. It is essentially a smaller version of the Vespa 150 Sprint with a smaller bore diameter and lower gear ratios. This was aimed at reaching the European market for 125 cc beginner riders. Most body parts and many engine parts (except Piston, Cylinder and gearbox) are interchangeable between the 125 GT and the 150 Sprint. It is known for its distinctive, angular design, which distinguishes it from earlier Vespa models.
The frame number of the Vespa is stamped on the edge of the frame just below the left side cheek. As far as the lettering and Emblems are concerned, the Legshield is adorned with a single line of "Vespa GT" lettering in relief. Initially, the rectangular Piaggio Emblem could be found there, which was then replaced by the Piaggio hexagon from around October 1967. At the rear, above the Rear Light, is the Badge "Gran Turismo".
The Vespa 125 GT was produced in three main versions:
VNL1T (1961-1962)
VNT1T (1963-1965)
VNL2T (1966-1973)
The Frame of the Vespa 125 GT did not differ from the Sprint Model. The Engine was adopted unchanged from the Super 125, with the exception of Elevation compression. From 1966, the GT 125 was offered alongside the Sprint 150.
As an export version, the GT was labelled "Vespa Sprint" on the Legshield. Its technical specifications varied in detail depending on the country-specific approval regulations. The VNT1T was manufactured exclusively for the export market. The GT export model intended for the Austrian market is characterised by a number of special features. There is a headlight flasher on the left Handlebar. The speedometer dial has an unconventional graduation that goes up to a top speed of 110 km/h. This model also has a plastic Cylinder Cover.
The GT series started in 1961 with the Vespa 125 T (VNT1T) and continued from 1962 with the Vespa 125 GT (VNT2T), both of which were essentially similar to the Vespa 150 (VBB1T) from the same production years, albeit with an engine capacity of only 125 cc. Both models had a 4-speed gearbox. The successor model, the Vespa 125 GT (VNL1), which was produced from 1963/64, was similar to the Vespa 150 GL (VLA1T), but also only had 125 cc and 8-inch wheels. These models were only offered in Switzerland and France. A pre-series version of the Vespa 125 Sprint (VNL2T) was also only launched in these countries in 1965, before the regular series of the Vespa 125 GT (VNL2T) was also introduced in Italy. In Italy, the model was delivered with a Single Saddle as standard, while a Seat was available as an optional extra.
The Engine of the Vespa 125 GT is an air-cooled single-cylinder two-stroke engine with a bore of 52.5 mm, a stroke of 57 mm and a displacement of 123.4 cc. The power output is 4.6 kW (6.27 hp) at 5,000 rpm, with a compression ratio of 1:7.8. The Vespa has a 4-speed manual gearbox and a kick-start device. The maximum speed is 88 km/h.
