The Piaggio Ape - A legend on three wheels comes to an end

The Ape, named after the Italian word for "bee", was first presented as a concept at the International Bicycle and Motorcycle Show in Milan on 23 November 1946. A preview was held at the end of 1947, and official series production began in 1948. Since then, the small tricycle has written an impressive success story. With its compact design, low purchase costs and reliable 2-stroke engine, the Ape quickly became a popular means of transport for Italian small businesses.

From Italy to India - a global success story

in 1999, Piaggio relocated production of the Ape to India, to the factory in Baramati. From there, the vehicles were exported to numerous countries, including Africa, South America and Asia. Indian production has contributed to the Ape achieving cult status outside Europe too.

The end of the Ape in Europe

But now the current Ape 50 is facing the end in Europe. Ever stricter environmental and safety regulations make continued production uneconomical. Piaggio's company headquarters confirmed that investing in the modernisation of the tricycle to meet Euro 5+ standards would not be profitable. In addition to new emissions regulations, airbags and a modern brake system would also have been necessary.
Production in Pontedera will be discontinued at the turn of the year and production capacity will be switched to the four-wheeled, electrically powered Porter. In future, the Ape will only be available in Europe as a stock vehicle.

Continued existence in other markets

In India, however, the story of the Ape continues. The cult vehicle will not only continue to be produced there, but will also be actively sold in markets such as Africa. For many, the Ape remains an indispensable means of transport and a symbol of mobility and versatility.
