E-bike tuning and software updates

We are constantly receiving enquiries about e-bike tuning and software updates. Often you don't know whether you can update the software of your Engine, or problems have already occurred - for example, a new software version has been installed and now the Tuning Chip E-Bike no longer works or the E-Bike has been completely shut down.

Read descriptions and instructions!

In our product descriptions, we explain exactly how the Tuning Chip behaves in relation to the software. Let's take the current VOLspeed V2 Tuning Chip (Gen4 Smart System) for e-bikes/pedelecs with a Bosch Smart System Engine (BES3) as an example. The product description states:

"Compatible with Bosch Smart System software up to version 11.13.0 and with LED-Remote / Purion 200 / System Controller software version 11.9.3. Also compatible with firmware 12.13.0. However, please do not carry out any further software updates to the drive system as this could impair the function of the tuning."

You should follow these instructions! As a rule of thumb: Never install a software update before you have made sure that your Tuning Chip will still work afterwards. As a rule, however, the module manufacturers specify on their homepages exactly which module is compatible with which Engine and which software version. This information changes almost daily, and you should invest a few minutes in research BEFORE downloading a new software version from the engine manufacturer.

Some Tuning Chips need to be removed before installing the software and then reinstalled afterwards. It is therefore essential that you read the Instruction Manual for the Tuning Chip. Not only will you find information about which Engines and Displays the module is suitable for, but also a clear warning about software updates. If we stay with the example of the VOLspeed V2 (Gen4 Smart System): The instructions clearly state: 'Do not carry out any software updates to the drive system after installing the tuning. These could cause the tuning to malfunction. Once updates have been installed, they cannot be undone, not even by the dealer." The following warning also applies: "Insertion in vehicles with unsuitable drive systems and/or display types will lead to malfunctions or damage to the e-bike or tuning module."

We offer the Instruction Manual for most Tuning Chips as a free download.

Please note: Please understand that we cannot refund the costs of a Tuning Chip if you install it incorrectly or install incompatible software updates. Everything that is clearly mentioned in the product description and Instruction Manual must be observed when using the module.

New software versions

The manufacturers of drive systems regularly bring new software versions onto the market. If you want to be on the safe side - and we recommend this - visit the tuning manufacturers' websites to find out about the latest software updates. For example, if you want to know whether your VOLspeed module for BOSCH is ready for an update, you can find the relevant information here: VOLspeed Blog.

If you look at the SpeedBox homepage and specifically at the latest module "SpeedBox 1.2 B.Tuning for Bosch", you will find that the Bosch Smart System 11.13.0 software version is not compatible with SpeedBox products ordered before May 2024.
