Jesco was at the Motorbike Expo in Verona 2025 for our "Custom Scooter Creations" series - and discovered a real highlight right at the start: a converted Vespa 50 Special, inspired by the world of Formula 1. The show bike was built by three creative minds from Racing Team S.M., who had every Screw in their own hands. Naturally, Jesco wanted to know everything about the project. The three creators: Michael, responsible for the detail work, Ivan, who made the bodywork and tuning parts by hand, and Gido, who built the centrepiece - the Engine. Their idea: to transfer the look and technology of a Formula 1 racing car to a smallframe Vespa.
F1 feeling on two wheels
This Vespa is a homage to Max Verstappen's Red Bull F1 in every respect - technically and visually well thought out down to the last detail. The frame has been extensively modified and all superfluous openings have been removed. A Rear Light with a characteristic hump, a PK-style Horn Cover and an integrated boot with a hidden Arduino control unit take over functions such as F1-style brake light control - and all without a trace.
Carbon fibre not only dominates the storage compartment, but can also be found as a flat Underbody Cover under the Footboards, in the Cylinder Cover, in the Handlebar and as a protective material on the engine block. A stylish finish is provided by LED strips and tail lights, the wiring of which remains invisible despite the complex technology.
The bodywork is impressive: a mirror-smooth surface, deep metallic black as the base colour, which perfectly accentuates the racing graphics. A central reinforcement tube between the Seat and Steering Head as well as a customised Handlebar with Motogadget indicators and a digital On-Bord Computer replace the classic speedometer of the 50 Special. The Headlight Unit is also a handmade one-off made of carbon fibre with LED technology - without any aftermarket solution.
For maintenance, there is an inconspicuous service flap that allows quick access to the 34 mm Dell'Orto VHSB. This eliminates the need to remove the Seat and provides space for a larger Tank with aeronautical Cap.
A show bike with 40 hp
The chassis has also been completely redesigned: a ZIP SP Fork with Disc Brake works at the front, Stage6 components such as the Shock Absorber, Brake Caliper and Brake Disc provide maximum control. A customised handlebar bracket fixes the hydraulic brake pump, operated via an adjustable racing lever. At the rear, an adjustable SIP suspension strut ensures perfect balance. Mitas MC35 semi-slick tyres with a soft rubber compound provide the necessary grip.
The centrepiece is the Quattrini M200 Engine, mounted on a special Quattrini Casing. The powerful "Big Bore" drive required deep interventions in the frame - the rear service flap was therefore sacrificed. A 34 mm Carburettor supplies the engine, which develops its power via a 4-speed gearbox with DRT components, VMC clutch and modified gear ratios. The striking Egig Cobra S Exhaust has been specially adapted to the M200. The result: around 40 hp of power on the test bench. The whole thing is controlled by a reliable SIP Ignition with variable pre-ignition and race mapping, designed for DC systems.
A project full of sophistication that required countless hours of work from the S.M. racing team. Built with attention to detail, the "Vespa Red Bull M200" also impressed on the international stage - and secured 3rd place at the Iron Kings International in the Distretto Ruote Piccole at Motorbike Expo 2025.
