25 Years SIP Scootershop

Ralf and Alex 1994 in front of the first shop in the Hessenstraße in Kaufering

It’s a quarter of a century since we founded SIP Scootershop in a garage. We stored our first products between the beehives owned by Alex’s father. In the absence of staff, we took the parcels to the post office by Vespa ourselves. Those were the days!

A lot has happened over the past two and a half decades: We have taken plenty of right decisions, and some wrong ones. We‘ve met people who‘ve become friends. We have been able to look at the topic of „scooters“ from a variety of angles. There have been stressful times, like sitting in front of the keyboard at two o‘clock in the morning in the cold former barracks in Erpftinger Straße wearing our jackets and gloves trying to come up with descriptive texts for the next catalogue. There have been moments of considerable joy, such as the road trips with friends and employees, when we arrived at the sea after a 1,000 km journey, with dust from the road on our faces, and raised a toast over an ice-cold beer. We have laughed, mused, celebrated and mourned together. This time line tells of these stories, highlights the milestones of the SIP history and reports about the big and small things that have made us into the company we are today.

In the future, we want to continue with the balancing act that has been important to us over the past 25 years: On the one hand to be an efficient, modern company and on the other, an authentic, honest family business.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our employees for their dedication and enthusiasm. We would like to thank all our customers for their trust and their loyalty to our brand over many years. Without you there would be no SIP Scootershop.

We hope to welcome as many of you as possible to our events and get to know you there over the years to come. Here’s to the next 25 years! Have fun with the SIP 1994-2019 time line. We wish you an accident-free scooter season!

Winter fun around the SIP Scootershop Headquarters in February 2021

The year 2021 started with a lot of fun: we built spikes on 2 Vespas and milled through the snowy landscape around the building, more about that in the blog - including video.

Yes, and then we were nominated: for the Best Workspaces Award 2022 - we are very excited about the outcome. But everyone who works for us knows anyway that we have exceptionally great workplaces in our new company building.

2021 was the anniversary year for VESPA: 1946-2021, that is 75 years old, the elegant sensual lady from Pontedera. We have a nice blog about it and wish her another happy birthday and a very long life!

Also in 2022 we have built a custom Vespa, this time a Vespa Rally 200 as a real everyday vehicle, but still extraordinary. Enjoy reading here in the blog and watching the pictures and video.

And despite the Corona pandemic, we also went on a SIP Vespa Road Trip to sunny southern France. There is a detailed report, many pictures and a SIP TV video.

The 2021 scooter season actually ended for us with the roll-off in Augsburg in sunny but cold autumn weather. Once again a great opportunity to meet many familiar faces and put some extra kilometres on the speedometer. Here are the report, many nice pictures and a small SIP TV video.

We are looking forward to the 2022 scooter season!

Keep Distance, stay safe is the slogan of the Year 2020

The year 2020 will go down in history as the year of the corona pandemic. Fortunately, we at SIP Scootershop were not affected by a closure and thanks to generous stocking of goods we were able to deliver throughout the year. Unfortunately, some of our beloved events have fallen victim to infection control, such as our Open Day in May or the SIP Joyride in July. Next year, however, the VORFREUDE will be all the greater!

At least our annual SIP Vespa Road Trip could take place at the beginning of August, this time we rode with 21 SIP Team Members on vintage Vespas to Corsica - a dream tour. We brought you a detailed report, many pictures and a SIP TV video.

SIP Scootershop becomes a quarter of a century old. The business that started in a garage in 1994 is now celebrating its 25th anniversary! In addition to this chronicle, there’s been an Open Day celebrating the anniversary, a second edition of the TACHO KARACHO drag race, a joyride around Lake Ammersee in July and a scooter pilgrimage in September.

I limited edition there are also great anniversary products for 25 years of SIP Scootershop: the handmade helmets by70s Helmets, the 25 years SIP T-Shirts, the high quality handmade enamel badge, the patch and of course the sticker in the shape of the Piaggio hexagonal. Have fun with it! Here's to another 25 years of performance & style!

The SIP Vespa Road Trip took us to the Champagne region of France in 2019! As usual we brought a SIP TV video with us:

For all those who visit us personally by scooter, the SIP pass sticker, in the style of an Alpine pass badge, is available. Take your helmet in hand and ask at the counter! In addition to the Open Day, there is also a Retailer’s Day for selected specialist retail customers for the first time. A full SIP collection of clothing for scooter drivers is launched, with T-shirts, hoodies and socks. The first After Work Aperitivo takes place at the SIPERIA, from now on it is held once a month on Thursdays from 5 pm. With the name TACHO KARACHO, the first DBM drag race takes place directly in front of our building. In the Italian Scooter Championship TROFEO MALOSSI, SIP is the first foreign racing team ever to win the Northern Championship.

With the SIP Performance Ignition, SIP launches a high performance ignition for old Vespa models on the market.

In 2017 the 2nd SIP Open Day already took place at the new location at Marie-Curie-Str. 4 in Landsberg.

SIP introduces the SIP PRIMO shipping option for customers in Germany and Austria: the principle is simple, pay a one-time annual fee of 20 Euros and order for twelve months free of shipping costs. Each shipment is also sent as a SIP express shipment, with 1 litre of oil as a one-off welcome gift. In March, with plenty of night shifts and a great team, the big move to the new building goes surprisingly smoothly. SIP Scootershop now has more than four times as much space as it did at its old location and a 300 sq. m. flagship store with an Italian bar / pizzeria called SIPERIA. Modern logistics, a large warehouse and the latest light-flooded workplaces make the company fit for the future. In May, the building is inaugurated for the public at a Grand Opening, which is attended by 1,400 visitors, friends and customers.

The plans have been running for 2 years, the ground-breaking ceremony takes place in May, and the topping-out ceremony for the new logistics and administration building takes place in September about 1 km away from the old location on the Graf-Zeppelin-Straße in Landsberg. The consistently increasing need for space, especially for goods but also for some 100 employees, makes the completion of the new building urgently necessary. SIP finds another competent planner for industrial and commercial construction in the shape of the architectural office Ott from Augsburg.

20 years of SIP Scootershop, who would have thought that when Alex and Ralf extended the basement at Ralf‘s parents’ place, taking their first steps in sales of scooter parts there and at various scooter meetings? SIP exhibits at INTERMOT in Cologne for the first time, directly opposite the PIAGGIO booth. In the same year, SIP is verified as a manufacturer by the German Federal Motor Transport Authority, which opens up the possibility of developing products with ABE or parts certificates.

In addition to the new customer magazine Curve, which is published for the first time in the summer of 2013, SIP Scootershop also focuses on events. While the SIP team welcomes some 1,500 international guests to the Motor Scooter Customshow in Landsberg in spring, the visit to the EICMA (as an exhibitor for the first time) successfully rounds off the year. In the summer of 2013, the SIP Shop in Landsberg gains a completely new interior, with lots of old wood and even more love.

SIP presents the first digital speedometer/rev counter for the Vespa PX, several more models and functions follow.

The team worked on it for one and a half years. In 2012, the waiting is finally over: The Classic catalogue. 940 pages packed with products, technology, pictures... the “SIP Bible” is published in German and English – and because it’s such a success, an exclusive parts, Lambretta and Modern Vespa catalogue follows in the subsequent months. At german EOCOM Mailorder Congress 2016, the SIP Classic Catalogue is awarded „Catalogue of the Year“. You can still download this catalogue as PDF here.

The next years are characterised by an increasingly international orientation. After the USA and Asia, SIP boss Ralf travels to Russia. It’s a Vespa mission, of course. Other team members are also keen to travel and ride together for a week every summer on a scooter tour. To Italy, France, Croatia, Sardinia, Spain and Austria. Switzerland ... only to come home having discovered the same thing every time: No matter where you go, love for the Vespa and Lambretta brings people together all over the world. To take this into account, the SIP webshop goes online in 10 languages in the same year.

"Scooter Cross" is also a hot topic in 2010, the SIP team is forming teams to build scooters suitable for off-road use. Demons of Scootercross takes place in the motocross track near Landsberg, a real battle of material

In 2009, SIP not only celebrates its 15 year anniversary, it also looks to the future, as for the following year, a close cooperation with one of the leading suppliers of high-quality accessories and tuning is planned: SIP Scootershop is to become exclusively responsible for imports of MALOSSI in Germany. At the Scooter Cross Landsberg in the same year, things are more down home. The SIP team ventures onto the terrain for the first time and organises a Scooter Cross race in Landsberg.

With the SIP Road exhaust, one of the first box exhaust systems for classic Vespas is launched onto the market with great success.

From the year 2008 there is a SIP TV video of the season start in nearby Augsburg - enjoy it!

In 2007 an extension consisting of a 600 sq. m. high rack warehouse with a height of up to 10m is added. This means that 2,500 sq. m. of storage space and more than 400 sq. m. of office and shop space are now available. At the same time, the merchandise management system is converted to a new, self-developed system. Combined with modern logistics, from spring 2007 onwards, this results in a significantly higher parcel throughput and therefore ensures short delivery times. At this time, the 50 SIP employees are shipping out up to 400 parcels per day. With Kathrin Brand, SIP Scootershop trains Bavaria‘s Best Wholesale and Foreign Trade Management Assistant in 2007.

In 2007 the SIP Team Tour leads to Eurovespa in San Marino, the small city-state near Rimini. There is also an early SIP TV video of this Vespa Road Trip:

In 2006 the SIP Team Tour leads to the Eurovespa in Turin, Northern Italy. There are pictures and already a SIP TV video of the tour:

The STOFFIS / SIP SCOOTERSHOP Racing Team is founded, and until 2016, successfully competes in countless classic races as part of the European Scooter Challenge.

In 2002, it’s time for a new chapter in the SIP story. The premises at the former barracks are bursting at the seams. Some external warehouses are therefore rented, and an old Ape TM from the 1960s moves everything back and forth. It‘s a lot of fun and the neighbours are happy, but in the long run it quite simply costs too much time. It’s time for a new building with enough space for a large warehouse, offices and a shop. After an intensive planning phase, the company is finally able to move into its new headquarters in the Landsberg industrial park shortly before the Christmas holidays. The commercial building wins architectural awards and is presented in several magazines.

Thanks to an increasingly extensive product range and 15 motivated, scooter-loving employees, SIP Scootershop GmbH is already entering the 2000s as one of the largest mail order shops for scooter accessories.

Relocation in the old Ritter-von-Leeb barracks to the former team dining hall

In 1999, the company decides to include accessories for automatic vehicles in its product range. More space is required again, so SIP Scootershop rents the former crew dining room and additional rooms with approx. 1,000 sq. m. in addition to the NCO club. Thanks to an increasingly extensive product range and 15 motivated, scooter-mad employees, SIP Scootershop GmbH enters the 2000s as one of the biggest mail-order shops for motor scooter accessories.

With the SIP Performer tyres, SIP launches one of the first tyres onto the market for 10“ scooters with approval for up to 120 km/h. Approval has now been granted for up to 150 km/h.

the first SIP Scootershop website in 1998

In 1998 the first website of SIP Scootershop was created, already in German and English and with a first webshop which was connected to our MS-DOS inventory control system via ASCII data record export. Already then: live stock for several thousand articles.

At that time SIP Scootershop also had used Vespa scooters for sale, which we regularly brought back from Italy. Not only did many scooters come to the north via the Brenner Pass but also friendships were made which last until today, e.g. with Cao von 70s Helmets or Mamo, industrial designer for Lamborghini who has also designed some of our own products.

In 1996, larger premises are therefore rented at the former NCO club at the disbanded Ritter-von- Leeb barracks in Landsberg. Each year, the SIP Scootershop start-up compiles a German and English mail order catalogue (as demand is also increasing beyond linguistic borders) to present its range of approx. 2,000 items. You can read our very first mailorder catalogue (only german) online here.

The SIP shop in the basement had an impressive 35sqm

In the summer of 1994, the two decide to turn their long-standing hobby and their passion for „scooter riding“ into their job. The idea turns out to be a huge hit, and within a very short time the 35 sq. m. basement shop in Kaufering becomes too small.

Alexander Barth and Ralf Jodl have been working with Vespa scooters since 1989. Dissatisfied with the choice of tuning and custom parts available at the time, they developed their own specialist components which they distributed to friends and acquaintances in small quantities. They forge close contacts with many tuners and suppliers in the then scooter scene, such as Stefan Onken from Nordspeed Tuning, Paul Melici from PM Tuning and Jim Lomas from JL Exhausts. Good links with Italy ensure the deliveries of high-quality accessories.
