Thread Gauge Metrisch 0,4-7,0/​Whitworth 4-62

A Thread Pitch Gauge to determine the pitch of a thread. With the help of various pitch templates metric, but also Whitworth (imperial) threads can be graded.

The purpose of a thread gauge is to identify the pitch of a thread, which is a designation of the distance a nut or bolt travels when rotated 360° while engaged. A screw-pitch template functions by using the light-gap method and, strictly speaking, should only be used to measure external threads. In practice however they can also be used to grade internal threads, providing the template used fits into the diameter of the threaded opening. To measure the pitch of a thread the template is placed along the thread in question and then both are exposed to a light source. If a gap is apparent between them another size of template must be selected until one is found that lets no light through, fitting the contours of the thread exactly. The pitch-grade, embossed into the template, represents the pitch of the measured thread.
