In 2008, Piaggio launched the Vespa GTS 300 i.e. Super with a 278 cc Engine, which not only underwent a technical but also a visual redesign. The changes included black-painted rims, a more angular Front Cover without parking lights, a darkened Headlight Unit, analogue instruments, no Luggage Carrier as standard and a Seat with a white border. From 2009, the model was also offered with a 124 cc injection engine as the Vespa GTS 125 i.e. Super. Another variant, the GTS Touring, is characterised by a short windscreen and a front carrier and is equipped exclusively with the 278 cc Engine.
The 2019 GTS 300 was presented at the Eicma in November 2018 and was updated in two areas: the design and the Engine. The look was largely characterised by the new, longer "tie" on the front of the Legshield. This element, which was originally introduced on the 946 and later adopted by the Primavera and Sprint models, also suits the GTS very well. The Legshield was also given a light edge and a slightly slimmer design. The Air Intakes on the side were fitted with a honeycomb-shaped Grill, and the Covers in the lower area at the rear were also subtly revised. The new Headlight Unit and rear light, both of which are now equipped with full LED technology, provide a more modern touch.
The familiar, liquid-cooled SOHC single-cylinder engine has been revised quite radically, as has the CVT gearbox. The Cylinder Head was completely new with larger Valves, different Springs and a new Camshaft. The Piston, the injection - now with high pressure -, the Airbox including intake ducts and the electronics were also replaced in the new Engine. It already met the Euro 5 standard, as Piaggio explained, and was therefore significantly cleaner, more fuel-efficient and also - an important point for Euro 5 - quieter. The modified CVT transmission contributed to this by emitting fewer vibrations and shielding the resulting noise better.
Surprisingly, the Engine was still able to provide more power. Just under 24 hp meant an increase of twelve, 26 Newton metres an increase of 18 percent. This meant that the new single-cylinder engine had earned the designation HPE, at least from a Vespa perspective: High Performance Engine. It was the most powerful Engine ever installed in a production Vespa.
