Piaggio unveiled a new engine series in 2011 with the Vespa Quarantasei design study, which is reminiscent of the first Vespa, the MP6 from 1946. The chassis of the Vespa 946 is made of sheet steel, while parts such as the front Mudguard, Handlebar and side covers are made of aluminium alloy. A horizontally mounted gas spring element (monoshock) is installed in the rear axle. The model also has an anti-lock braking system (ABS) and traction control (ASR). The Headlight Unit relies entirely on LED technology.
The aesthetic concept of the Vespa 946 was developed by the Piaggio design team consisting of Marco Lambri, Mirko Zocco and Marco Canepa at the Piaggio Design Centre. Inspired by the idea of what a Vespa might look like in 2020, they created a design approach for the 946 that is both radical and clear. The 946 combines modern elements with allusions to the brand's rich history. For example, it takes up the design of the "low tail" of the historic Vespa MP6 and integrates a floating Single Seat reminiscent of the traditional Single Saddles.
In 2013, the Vespa 946 was launched on the market at a price of 9,000 euros in white and black colour variants. This edition, which ran under the name Ricordo Italiano and was limited to a quantity of 3,600 vehicles, reserved 300 units for the German market and 200 for the Austrian market, with only the 125 cc model being offered. Production of these vehicles took place in May 2013.
It was planned that the Vespa 946 would be released in a new edition every year, with different colours planned for each year. Colours used once were not to be repeated, so that the colour of each model provided information about the year of manufacture. The name of the respective edition was engraved on the metal cover on the right under the Single Seat as a special detail. Special editions with slightly different equipment features were also planned. For example, the Belissima special model had a shortened Single Seat, but could be extended to include a seat for a passenger, and also came with a Luggage Carrier.
In 2023, Piaggio launched a new series of the Vespa 946 and has since used the Asian lunar calendar to bring the so-called "Lunar Collection" onto the market. The Year of the Rabbit marked the start of these limited-edition scooters, followed by the Year of the Dragon in 2024 and finally the Year of the Snake in 2025. Production of this scooter series is set to continue until 2034.
The engines are air-cooled three-valve four-stroke engines with a capacity of 125 and 150 cc. They were inserted in the Vespa LX from 2012 and were later also installed in other Piaggio scooters. The Vespa 946 model, which is suitable for everyday use, was presented at the EICMA 2012 and uses these already familiar engines.
