The Vespa 50 R was produced at the same time as the Vespa V50 from 1969 to 1971 and continued until 1983. The Vespa 50 R, where "R" stands for "renovata" (renewed), represents the further development of the Vespa 50 N model. Alongside the Special, the 50 R was one of the most successful Vespa models, although it did not have the same iconic charm as the "Special". A major difference to the "Special" were the open 9-inch rims, a round Headlight Unit and a 3-speed gearbox, in contrast to the 4-speed gearbox fitted in the "Special".
Series 1 (1969 - 1970): This series was characterised by open rims, non-hydraulic Shock Absorbers, the absence of a Headlight ring, a fin on the Mudguard, Rubber Floor Runners, cursive lettering, aluminium Fuel Tap Cover, a "V-shaped" Flywheel Cover and an internal Ignition Coil. From 1971, the engine code was changed to V5AM. The vehicle had 9-inch wheels with self-ventilated Drum Brakes.
Series 2 (1972-1974): This period saw the introduction of a horizontal Badge, as well as new knobs and Levers. Between 1974 and 1978 there were changes to the lettering, serial numbers, Flywheel Cover, and the holes for the Single Saddle in the Tank were removed. From 1978 to 1983 there were changes to the cut-out for the Brake Pedal and its rubbers.
The Engine is identical to the Vespa 50L. From 1975, the internal Ignition Coil moved to the outside.
