The design of the Nuova is strongly orientated towards the V50 and V90 models. It is characterised by the side jaws integrated into the self-supporting sheet steel frame. Access to the engine is only through a flap, with the Cylinder tilted at an angle of 45° for improved access. The Nuova's Handlebar corresponds to that of the Vespa Super. The frame number of the Vespa is located on the upper edge of the opening leading to the Engine. The lettering and Emblems feature dark blue die-cast aluminium, with the "Vespa 125" lettering in the old font on the Legshield. A rectangular Piaggio Emblem can be found above the Horn Cover. For seating, the Vespa features a dark blue "Aquila" brand Single Saddle. A seat is also available as an alternative.
Introduced in 1965, the Nuova added a 125 cc variant to the Vespa smallframe series, which had existed since 1963 and previously included models with 50 and 90 cc. This model marked a first for Vespa: It was the first with a 125 cc Engine and 10-inch Tyres, equipped with self-venting Drum Brakes, similar to those of the Vespa 90 Super Sprint.
The engine layout of the Nuova is similar to that of the 50 and 90 cc models, but the displacement of 121.17 cc differs from the traditional specifications, which are usually associated with a bore and stroke of 55 x 51 mm. The Carburettor, a Dellorto SHB 16/16, is positioned centrally under the Seat, which is a typical arrangement for this vehicle.
The Vespa 125 differs from its successor model, the Vespa 125 Primavera, in a number of key respects. The differences include:
Short Frame: Compared to the Primavera, the Vespa 125 has a shorter frame.
Wider Legshield and Floor Board: The Legshield is 18 mm wider, which also results in a wider Floor Board.
Lack of Glovebox in the side cheek: In contrast to the Primavera, the Vespa 125 does not have a Glovebox in the side cheek.
Emblems in 'old' form: All Emblems, including the Piaggio rectangle on the Legshield and the speedometer as well as the curved Vespa Badge, are in the old shape.
Cylinder cover: Initially made of Plate, this was later replaced by a plastic version.
Internal Ignition Coil: A feature that differs from the Primavera.
Carburettor model: The Vespa 125 is equipped with an SHB 16.16 carburettor, while the Primavera uses an SHB 19.19 carburettor.
Front Brake Drum: On the Vespa 125, the Brake Drum is wider at the Simmerring mount.
Tank with mounting holes for the Single Saddle: This is a specific feature of the Vespa 125.
Different suspension under the kicker pinion: Instead of a coil spring as on later models, the Vespa 125 uses a Spring Washer, similar to the V50 1st series. We recommend replacing this with a coil spring during an overhaul.
Wide Floor Runners: These are identical to those of the Vespa 125 GTR.
Slightly differently shaped Handlebar: The top of the Handlebar is more curved than on the Primavera.

Thin 19 mm Centre Stand: This feature was shared with the Primavera until its model change in 1973/74.
Missing aluminium edge protection: The aluminium edge protection is no longer available for the wider Legshield compared to the Primaveras.
Antique rear light with small Reflector and aluminium rim: This design element visually sets the Vespa Nuova apart from other models.
Handlebar end indicators for the German version: A specific adaptation for the German market.
Type Plate on the tunnel and small aluminium plate with frame number: In Germany, the Vespa Nuova was provided with these identifying features, with the aluminium plate attached to the rear right Legshield end.
Rear Light with large Reflector: Another distinguishing feature of the models sold in Germany.
American Sears model ("Blue Badge"): This Model is distinguished by a completely different Rear Light.
Export model for Sweden with SS Seat: The export model intended for Sweden was delivered as standard with a rear-folding SS Seat, which is a unique feature.
