In the 1960s and 1970s, motorbike insurance in Switzerland was extremely expensive due to the high number of motorbike accidents. At that time, the annual premium for insurance was calculated based on the number of cubic centimetres of the vehicle's engine. For example, the annual premium for a Vespa Rally 200 cost as much as the purchase price of the vehicle - an amazing fact!
To avoid these high costs, special Vespa models were developed just for the Swiss market. One example of this is the Rally 175. The insurance premium rose noticeably for models with more than 180 cc, so the Engines were throttled back to 175 cc to keep the premium proportionally lower. This is how the Rally 175 came into being.
The Vespa VNT was similar. A Vespa with 150 cc caused higher insurance costs and required more extensive vehicle testing. The Vespa VNT was therefore developed, which was based on the Vespa VBB 150 cc. The 10-inch wheels were replaced by 8-inch wheels and a 125 cc Engine was installed, finalising the VNT. Otherwise, it is identical in construction to the Vespa 125 from 1951.
Only around 15,000 of this model were produced, making it a relatively rare Vespa. The prices are correspondingly high. Where do you look for this vehicle?
