The Vespa 125 (VN1-2T) is the last Italian model with the Headlight Unit on the front Mudguard ("lamp at the bottom") and at the same time the last version of the so-called "Wideframe" series in the 125 cc class. While the older models (V30, V33, VM) were even more in focus, the VN was primarily designed with cost optimisation in mind. This is reflected in numerous simplified details and the generally reduced equipment. Nevertheless, the VN retains its classic Vespa charm and, from a historical perspective, is an important link between the early wideframes and the later models with a Handlebar-mounted Headlight Unit.
The VN1-2T was the successor to the Vespa 125 VM. In the 1950s, Piaggio increasingly shifted its focus to more powerful 150 cc models, which were more popular at home and abroad. As a "slimmed-down" version, the VN tended to be designed as an affordable entry-level scooter:
Only 7 Floor Runners were fitted instead of the previous 9.
The Suspension Arm Cover was omitted completely.
Badges and Emblems were made of simpler materials.
The Centre Stand had to do without rubber feet.
The front mudguard with the typical lamp housing nevertheless remained a characteristic identifying feature of the Vespa 125 (VN1-2T) and makes it unmistakable among enthusiasts today.
Following the fundamental change in the Engine from V33 to VM, the chassis number VN2 6000/6001 underwent another important optimisation: A Sliding Bearing was inserted on the Driveshaft instead of the third Ball Bearing on the gearshift detent side (as on GS, VL and VB). The Flywheel was made flatter and more streamlined. The Flywheel covers were given a new shape. The VM engine corresponds to a VN1 engine up to the number VN2M 6000.
The VN series is highly sought-after on today's classic car and Vespa market. Anyone looking specifically for the characteristic wide-frame scooters will find the VN1-2T to be the last "lamp down" model (Faro Basso) in the 125 cc class. Although it was introduced as a "cheap model", it is historically interesting and is often traded for corresponding prices - especially if the vehicle is in original condition. Due to the many simplifications and the fact that 150cc models and later handlebar lamp variants were often favoured for restoration, the supply of completely original VN scooters is limited. Collectors attach great importance to details such as the aluminium Kickstart Lever without rubber pad and the correct number of Floor Runners. Where do you look for this vehicle?

The VN1-2T is the last Wideframe 125 with "Faro Basso" ("lamp at the bottom").
Due to the reduced Frame Parts (fewer Floor Runners, no rubber feet on the Centre Stand etc.), the overall weight is slightly lower than the VM.
The Suspension Arm Cover was omitted completely, which from today's perspective was not only a cost factor, but also gave the scooter a "tidy" appearance.
The engine design largely corresponds to that of the VM series, which means that many spare parts are compatible.
In restoration projects, attention should be paid to original Emblems and Badges, as the VN was often replaced with later components from other series.
Historical reports from Italian newspapers of the 1950s praised the VN1-2T for its solid engineering, but noted that it was less prestigious than the 150 cc models. Most VN1T and VN2T scooters were mainly used in inner-city areas, which is why Replacement Parts such as a leg shield luggage rack or a second Seat are rarely found. In the international collectors' scene, the VN1-2T is particularly popular today with lovers of classic wide-frame scooters, as it represents the last stage of a line rich in tradition and still has typical Vespa qualities such as reliability and easy maintenance.
