Overview Vespa 125 (VM1-2T)

The Vespa 125 (VM1-2T) is the further development of the V33T and marks the step for Piaggio towards a fundamentally revised technology in terms of Engine, Frame and equipment. In addition to numerous detailed changes to the chassis and bodywork, the new engine with 2-channel cross-scavenging in particular contributes to a significantly better power delivery. The Exhaust Manifold now runs vertically downwards, as was retained for all later models.
The model series already shows clear external differences to its predecessor, for example in the changed lines of the cheeks. Comfort elements such as a more comfortable Single Saddle and a larger Tank were also implemented.

Model history of the Vespa 125 (VM1-2T)

The VM1T came onto the market as the direct successor to the V33T and underwent extensive changes. The most noticeable change is the modified engine cheek, which is no longer open but has seven Airing Fins. The Engine itself was also redesigned: Instead of the previous single duct, there are now two transfer ducts arranged opposite each other, which enables significantly more effective scavenging and better performance. In addition, the chassis has been reinforced in several areas, such as the rear frame section and the upper area of the Legshield, in order to increase rigidity.

Further innovations have been made to the electrics: the Flywheel of the flywheel magneto ignition has elongated inspection openings so that the ignition contact can be easily adjusted from the outside with a screwdriver. The Flywheel Cover on the VM1T is almost completely round and only has one central opening. The Clutch was increased to three cork and three steel discs and the 3-speed gearbox was given more stable Gear Cogs, a larger Cruciform and a one-piece Driveshaft.

The following series, the VM2T, essentially brought adaptations in line with changed Italian road traffic regulations, including a parking light in the headlight and a red indicator light on the top of the Headlight Body to show the function of the headlight. The rectangular Rear Light was again slightly enlarged. On late VM2T models, it also happened that some of the cheeks were already made of sheet steel.

The Engine of the Vespa 125 (VM1-2T)

The new engine of the VM1T is based on a 125 cc two-stroke unit with a bore/stroke ratio of 54 × 54 mm. It works with cross scavenging, which enables better scavenging of the Cylinder and thus cleaner combustion. A striking feature is the Cylinder Head with an angled spark plug thread, whose spark plug is no longer centred but inclined by 45°. The Piston was given a new, more compact nose, the so-called "deflector".
The Crankshaft was also revised: Instead of mushroom-shaped crank webs, round ones have now been installed to ensure better balancing. Together with the revised Clutch (now with 3/3 Washers) and the more stable 3-speed gearbox, reliability is increased, especially at higher engine speeds.

Used Vespa 125 (VM1-2T) market situation

The Vespa 125 (VM1-2T) enjoys a high status on today's classic and youngtimer market. Due to their comparatively small number and the elaborate technology with numerous individual features, well-preserved examples are coveted collector's items. Original models with aluminium engine blocks and the early Flywheel Cover are in particularly high demand. The original condition plays a key role here - frame reinforcements, untouched engine components and the typical, sometimes dark green saddle design are particularly value-enhancing. Prices vary greatly depending on condition, completeness and historical documentation. In restored condition, the VM1T is often traded for four- to five-figure sums, while vehicles in need of major restoration only realise part of this sum, depending on the market. Where do you look for this vehicle?

Miscellaneous Vespa 125 (VM1-2T)

  • Compared to the V33T, the 6.25 litre tank now holds 1.25 litres more.

  • The rear Brake Drum was given a reinforcement ring to reduce deformation due to heat stress.

  • Newly arranged Bowden cables for the Clutch and throttle run inside the steering tube, which makes the look tidier and protects the cables better.

  • The newly shaped aluminium cylinder scoop now encloses the entire cylinder and thus improves cooling.

  • The Seat (Single Saddle) has been made more comfortable with two crowned Springs and a chrome Grab Rail for the passenger has been added.

  • From VM1T onwards, the "shell-shaped" casing of the Light Switch is made entirely of grey plastic and bears the Vespa Badge in relief.

According to contemporary reports from Italian motoring magazines of the early 1950s, the VM1T was praised for its slightly improved top speed and smoother running. Depending on the source, the maximum speed was around 70 km/h, which was quite remarkable for its time. The Vespa 125 also enjoyed growing popularity when exported to Germany: travel reports emphasised the qualities of the new crankshaft design and its reliability in everyday use. The Vespa VM also formed the basis for the famous and victorious Vespa Sport of 1953, known as the "Sei Giorni".
Collectors today particularly appreciate vehicles with an "O" Paint finish, such as the classic "Grigio Beige". In addition, conversions to larger Carburettors or "wideframe" tuning parts can be found time and again, which increase performance but can reduce the historical value and originality. If you want to buy a VM1T or VM2T, you should make sure that the Engine and frame numbers match.
