The Vespa ACMA 125 cc N is the result of a co-operation between the Italian manufacturer Piaggio and the French company ACMA (Ateliers de Construction de Motocycles et Automobiles). ACMA produced various Vespa models under licence at its factory in Fourchambault in order to offer a cheaper and locally available alternative to the Italian originals on the French market. The "N" version - short for "Normal" - is a simple scooter suitable for everyday use that impresses with its classic design and robust workmanship. With its typical curved lines and sturdy sheet metal body, the Vespa ACMA 125 cc N embodies the timeless charm for which Vespa models have become famous worldwide.
In the late 1950s and early 1960s, ACMA produced various Vespa models that largely corresponded to the Italian models, but were occasionally adapted for French registration regulations and preferences. The Vespa ACMA 125 cc N was produced between 1959 and 1962 and shared many technical features with the models produced in parallel in Italy. Nevertheless, there were minor visual and design differences, such as Emblems, Type Plates and sheet metal parts. These differences make the French Vespa variant particularly attractive for collectors and enthusiasts, as it plays an independent role in Vespa history while retaining the characteristic Vespa look.
The air-cooled two-stroke engine (2T AC) with a capacity of 125 cc is the heart of this scooter and is based on the typical Vespa design principle: the Engine is located at the side in the rear, the gearbox is integrated and power is transmitted via a multi-disc clutch in an oil bath. With around 4 to 5 hp and a top speed of around 70 to 80 km/h, it was perfectly capable of keeping up with the traffic of the time. The gears were shifted using a twist grip on the Handlebar, which many fans of the classic Vespa consider to be a particularly characteristic feature. Thanks to the simple technology and a lively spare parts market, the ACMA 125 cc N Engine is still relatively easy to maintain and service today, which contributes to its long-lasting popularity.
Although ACMA produced considerable numbers of these scooters in France, well-preserved originals are comparatively rare today. You have to look harder, especially outside France, as the sales market was predominantly domestic. Nevertheless, models are still being imported, resulting in a small but growing fan base for French Vespa models in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. On the second-hand market, the price depends heavily on the condition and originality: a restored vehicle with a documented history and matching numbers is often significantly more expensive than a scooter with an unclear history and missing documentation. As many components of the Italian Vespa models also fit the French ACMA version, the supply of spare parts is quite good, although certain parts made especially for France are sometimes more difficult to find. A striking feature of ACMA Vespas are the specific Type Plates and Emblems, which bear the word "ACMA" instead of "Piaggio". The Crankcase and other components sometimes feature French embossing or references to production in Fourchambault. These small differences are particularly appealing to enthusiasts and collectors, as they tell the story of the Vespa in an international context. Just like its Italian sisters, the Vespa ACMA 125 cc N also requires regular maintenance to ensure the longevity of the two-stroke engine. A correct mixture of petrol and Oil, carefully adjusted cables and an intact electrical system are essential points at every inspection. In this way, the Vespa ACMA 125 ccm N remains not only a relic from an exciting phase of Vespa history, but also a reliable companion on the roads - with unmistakable, nostalgic style.
