The Piaggio Ape is a three-wheeled small and utility vehicle that has been produced by the Italian manufacturer Piaggio since the late 1940s. The name "Ape" (Italian for "bee") stands for the high payload and manoeuvrability of the vehicle, which was originally designed as a cost-effective transport solution for narrow roads and small delivery quantities. Technically, the Ape is based on the successful Vespa scooter, from which it takes the Engine and some components.
Over the decades, the Ape has been offered in different model series and variants, including the compact Ape 50, the more powerful Ape TM and the retro version Ape Classic. Depending on the model, the Ape has petrol or diesel engines and can be equipped with a closed cabin or open loading area. The combination of low fuel consumption, simple technology and low maintenance costs makes it a popular means of transport, particularly in southern European cities and rural regions.
In addition to its classic use in trade and agriculture, the Ape has recently also established itself as an advertising vehicle, mobile sales stand and event vehicle. Its unmistakable appearance and cult status contribute to the fact that it continues to be appreciated and used internationally despite its age.
