The Ape was first presented as a concept at the International Bicycle and Motorcycle Show in Milan on 23 November 1946. A pre-premiere on the market took place at the end of 1947, and official series production began in 1948. Since then, the Ape has written an impressive history. With its compact design, low purchase costs and reliable 2-stroke Engine, it quickly became an indispensable means of transport for small businesses in Italy. Production moved to India in 1999, to the Piaggio plant in Baramati, from where vehicles were also exported to Africa, South America and Asia. Production for Europe ended in 2024.
The original: The Ape 50 flatbed with a simple body and steel drop sides impresses with its compactness, manoeuvrability and economy. Ideal for transport in the countryside and in the city.
The most popular model in the series is the Ape 50 box with removable sheet steel body. It is versatile - whether for transport, advertising or creative conversions.
The Ape 50 Cross is the most modern and trendiest model in the series. With its eye-catching design, roll bar and robust metal front and rear bumpers, it is the ideal leisure companion. Preparation for car radios rounds off the range.
The Ape 50 is the smallest model in the series and has a 50 cc single-cylinder two-stroke engine with rotary valve control (bore 38.4 mm, stroke 43.0 mm). With an output of 1.9 kW (3 hp), it reaches just under 40 km/h. Newer variants offer practical separate lubrication with a separate Oil Tank. The unsynchronised four-speed gearbox is shifted via the left handlebar grip and the Clutch is operated via a Lever. Reverse gear, which can utilise all four gears via a countershaft gearbox, is engaged via a lever in the footwell.
