MOTOVESPA S.A. acted as Piaggio's Spanish licence holder from 1952 until the 1990s. After the Civil War and the Second World War, Spain was internationally isolated under Franco's Falangist dictatorship. Nevertheless, the Spanish Fiat representative Spartaco G. Boldori Malandri advised his friend Enrico Piaggio to set up a production plant in Madrid in order to meet the growing demand for motorised means of transport in Spain. Due to Spanish policy, which severely restricted the import of goods that could be produced locally, both Piaggio and Innocenti set up factories in Spain. Although MOTOVESPA opened in Madrid in 1952, it took a while to reach full production capacity. To cope with high demand and competition from the Lambretta factory in Eibar, MOTOVESPA began importing machines from Italy and secretly labelling them with Spanish serial numbers. In August 1952, however, a 13,000 square metre factory was built, from which the first MOTOVESPA emerged on 22 February 1953.
The Vespa scooters manufactured in Spain often had different components to the models from Italy. For example, MOTOVESPA introduced electronic Ignition to the Vespa scooters, an innovation that was only implemented later in the Italian versions with the Rally model. Licensed production in Spain continued until the late 1990s, after which the scooters were again imported from the Italian country of origin.
