The Italian brand MALAGUTI, famous for its motorbikes and scooters, celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2020. It was founded in 1930 by Antonio Malaguti in Bologna. The company initially manufactured bicycles, but later expanded its production to include small motorbikes. The brand has experienced both highs and lows throughout its history, including production stops, diversification, surges in demand during the oil crisis and financial challenges due to government subsidy policies and cheap imports.
The 1960s saw MALAGUTI as a successful manufacturer of scooters, with the 50cc Saigon scooter being particularly popular during the Vietnam War. In the 1980s, MALAGUTI survived the decline of many Italian moped manufacturers and was able to establish itself in third place behind Piaggio and Aprilia in the 1990s.
Despite financial challenges from 2004 onwards, including pressure from low-cost imports, MALAGUTI remained family-owned and sought to develop new revenue streams by producing motorbikes for other brands such as Yamaha. However, an innovative hybrid scooter presented in 2009 never went into series production and a sought-after investor could not be found, which led to production being discontinued in 2011.
in 2018, the Austrian KSR Group acquired the brand rights to MALAGUTI. Today, KSR sells a wide range of modern motorbikes and smaller scooters under the renowned MALAGUTI label. To mark its 90th anniversary, MALAGUTI launched two special editions: the Scrambler Monte Pro 125 and the Madison 300 scooter.
Over the decades, MALAGUTI has launched a whole range of scooters and maxi scooters onto the market. These include models such as the Centro, Phantom, Firefox, Spidermax and others. The current scooters are the 125 cc Madison, 125 and 200 cc Mission and the 125 cc Spectre.
The future of the brand is currently (October 2023) up in the air. The KSR Group had to file for insolvency in September 2023.
