The Special X project was launched to further enhance the already high quality and attention to detail that characterised Innocenti. Under the advertising slogan "SX-Appeal", Lambretta introduced the new model, which was offered in two engine variants, 150 and 200 cc. The 150 cc version had only minor visual modifications compared to the Li 150 Special, which it replaced. Nevertheless, a closer look revealed subtle differences to the other models.
The six-piece headset was retained, as were the Side Parts with Emblems and Indicators. A chrome-plated cast horn grille was added, along with a chrome flash in the centre of the front mudguard. The Special and X150 Badges were added to the front Legshields. The Legshields continued to feature a crest and thicker Lambretta lettering, as previously found on the 125 Special.
Both the 150 and 200 were fitted with the non-chromed headsets of the very last TV models, the 200 was fitted with a front Disc Brake and damper fork as on the TV models, while the 150 used the tried and tested drum at the front, both models had Drum Brakes at the rear. The 200 models were equipped with a 140 km/h speedometer, the 150 models with a 120 km/h speedometer. On the SX models, the face of the speedometer was changed, the Face Plate was a lower cover with a white bezel directly under the lens.
As with all Innocentis products, many changes were made during production. The first examples were fitted with white Light Switches, which were later replaced by black ones, and the normal Side Panels Trims with Grips gave way to clip-on elements. The metal toolboxes were later replaced by grey plastic parts, and the cast horn plate was replaced by an alloy with a blue background and the word Innocenti. There were also changes to the Forks, from Screw to Clip Buffers. The last SX150 models also had silver rims and hubs.
When production ceased in January 1969, some three years after it began, 31,238 150 cc versions had left the production line. The Italians found the cost of producing the Model too high, and of the 20,783 200 cc versions produced, most found their way to the UK.

Some improvements were made in the engine department of the 150cc models. The SH 20 Carburettor was now also used for this displacement class. The combination with a different Cylinder Elevated the power output to a very impressive 9.38 hp, which allowed a maximum speed of 96 km/h . The SX 150 was the only Lambretta to be equipped with two cylinder head gaskets - if the two-cylinder prototype of the SX 200 is not taken into account.
