Overview Lambretta 125 & 150 Special / LiS

In 1963, the Lambretta Li 150 Special was launched as a sportier version of the conventional Li and also as a cheaper option compared to the TV. This model was characterised by a unique design achieved by the revised Series 3 Cover, including an octagonal Steering Head, a new front mudguard, a special horn casting and modified Side Panels Trim. In order to benefit from tax advantages in Italy, a 125 cc version was added in October 1965, which was even more ambitious than the 150 cc version in terms of engine power tuning.

Model history Lambretta 125 & 150 Special / LiS

The Model's Side Parts featured fingerprint markings at the front and rear as well as two Emblems. The vehicle came with a double seat as standard, but the single seats of the Li were available as an optional extra on specific markets. In the course of production, a larger Steering Head was introduced for the 125 and 150 models, which made the insert of the Chrome Ring between the Steering Head and Horn unnecessary. In addition, grey switches were replaced by black ones, the fork bumpers could now be clipped in instead of being fitted with screws, and the Side Parts were also attached using a clip-in system instead of the conventional Grips. On later models, an aluminium plate with a blue background replaced the original crest plate, and the metal toolboxes were replaced by grey plastic versions.
In 1965, Innocenti launched two special models, presumably to boost sales or to promote the smaller 125cc models. The silver special model was not particularly noticeable as it was already finished in silver, whereas the gold special model was completely painted in a bright gold colour, including the Wheel Hubs and Fork. Both models were distinguished by a special rear frame badge with the designation "Special", matching the colour of the scooter in gold or silver, while at the front a chrome-plated badge in silver or gold was attached to the right Legshield. The gold model was fitted with a brown vinyl seat.
By the time production was discontinued in October 1966, a total of 69,529 units of the 150 Special and 29,841 units of the 125 Model had been produced.

Li 150 Special - First edition (from September 1963 to mid-1964)

  • The Distance Pieces of the Side Panels are made entirely of Rubber.

Li 150 Special - Second edition (From mid-1964 to May 1965)

  • The Distance Pieces of the Side Panels contain a metal spring.

Li 150 Special - Third edition (From May 1965 to September 1965)

  • In addition to the inscription "Special" on the Legshield, the Models are additionally labelled "Golden" or "Silver" according to their colour scheme.

Li 150 Special - Fourth edition (from September 1965 to October 1966)

  • The Chrome Ring between Handlebar and Legshield is removed and the Catches of the Side Panels are simplified in their handling.

The Engine of the Lambretta 125 & 150 Special / LiS

The Engine of the 150 version received a new Cylinder and Cylinder Head, but surprisingly it was not fitted with an 18 mm Carburettor. This led to an increase in power to 8.25 hp compared to the 6.6 hp of the standard version of the L.i. However, the design of the gearbox had weaknesses, in particular the third gear was thinner than usual, which meant a risk of breakage. For this reason, Innocenti replaced it in later models with a thicker gear with slightly modified ratios.
With a 20 mm carburettor and modifications to the Cylinder and Piston, similar to those of the 150 model, and an increased Carburettor, the 125cc version achieved an output of 7.12 hp and reached a top speed of around 80 km/h. The 125cc version outperformed the 150cc model. The 125cc version outperformed the 150cc in terms of acceleration, which was due to the lower gearbox used on this model. This special gearbox design was later also used in the sportier GP 125 and GP 200 models.
