in 1964, the market introduced an innovative series of Lambrettas known as the "i" series (for Innocenti), which was erroneously labelled the "J" series due to the visual similarity of the "i" logo to a "J" (moreover, the "J" does not exist in the Italian alphabet). A prototype of this design had already been presented three years earlier, in 1961, at the Milan Motor Show, although the model that ultimately went into series production had slight differences.
The Lambretta Junior 50 was characterised by a monocoque chassis made entirely of pressed steel and a centrally positioned Engine similar in design to the L.i, but with a vertically arranged Cylinder. Three engine variants with 50, 100 and 125 cc were initially offered. The monocoque frame was smaller than on other Lambretta model series, and it was assumed that the J series was primarily aimed at female customers, thanks to its lightness and the use of shorter Gearshifts. Models, with the exception of the Starstream, had no horn cover and there was a plastic Tool box under the Seat, the removal of which gave access to the Air Filter. The Side Panels, which covered the engine compartment and were often fitted with Grips, remained a characteristic feature of the J-series. Depending on the Model, the J offered either one Seat, one single seat or two single seats. The colour scheme of the covers was grey throughout, as on almost all Lambrettas, with the exception of the stands and the kickstart pedal rubber, which were black.
The first examples had 10-inch wheels, but these were changed to 2.75*9. The J50 had a double seat as standard to market the scooter as a cheap means of transport , no speedo, no leg guards and no steering wheel lock, while other changes included a much smaller Rear Light. Although this last item probably cost more, as in its place and in place of the number plate was a fluted plate with a chrome J50 Badge. As for the rest of the Emblem, a one-piece Lambretta J50 emblem was fitted to the Legshields, with an innocenti emblem just below the headset.
The Lambretta De Luxe featured a single front seat and a rear Luggage Carrier, which replaced the passenger carry. The leg covers were given chrome surrounds on this model. The Grips on the side panels were now no longer present and were replaced by a Clip-on type, as found on the larger machines of the time. The floor covering was changed from the earlier plastic floor strips to aluminium gutters with rubber inserts, as on the larger machines. Other changes included the use of 3.00*10 Tyres with aluminium grey painted rims and hubs. The J50 Badge was retained on the Legshields, but the Side Parts were given a De Luxe Badge on both sides, similar to the SX Models of the time.
From October 1964, the 50 cc Engine had a three-speed gearbox and reached a top speed of 40 km/h with an output of 1.47 hp.
The three-speed version was replaced by a four-speed model in September 1966, which retained most of the features of the three-speed model. The most significant change was introduced in November of the same year with a new Frame that was stronger than other Models due to consumer concerns. This included a new, thinner double seat, trimmed Legshields and a modified Rear Part. The four-speed model did not gain any speed with the extra gear, but still reached a speed of 40 km/h. The Lambretta J50 4-speed was replaced in January 1968 by the Lambretta J50 De Luxe, which returned to a three-speed gearbox.
