Overview KYMCO

KYMCO, short for Kwang Yang Engine Corporation, is a Taiwanese company specialising in the manufacture of scooters (with an engine capacity of 50 to 550 cc) as well as motorbikes and light motorbikes such as the Calypso 125, the Grand Dink 125, the Kymco Zing II, Hipster 125 and the Kymco Quannon. Founded in 1963, the company now has over 4,000 employees. Production takes place in three factories in Taiwan and abroad, including three factories in China and one each in Indonesia and Vietnam. With sales offices around the world, KYMCO was present in a total of 56 countries in 2022. In 2005, the company stated that it had sold 502,000 vehicles. In some countries, such as Japan and Austria, KYMCO is even the market leader in the 50 cc scooter category.

KYMCO model history

KYMCO scooters, scooters and maxi scooters have been available in Germany since 1994. A lot has happened since then, as KYMCO is constantly bringing out new models. Since 2011, KYMCO scooters such as the Downtown 300i ABS, the Kymco Super 8 and the Xciting 500 iR evo ABS, which have a continuously variable V-belt automatic transmission and an anti-lock braking system, have also been available in Germany. In 2012, Kymco expanded its range by introducing the Myroad 700i, which is positioned in the premium segment. There is also a retro model called Like, which is visually reminiscent of the Vespa LX.

A notable highlight is the 50 cc four-stroke engine with electronic petrol injection introduced in 2011, which is installed in the NEWSento 50i. It is KYMCO's first and, to date, only engine variant for scooters of this size with electronic fuel injection. in 2016, Kymco presented its top-of-the-range model at the Intermot trade fair in Cologne, the AK550, a two-cylinder that primarily competes against models such as Yamaha's X-Max and Suzuki's Burgman. This model, named AK550 in honour of Kymco's 50th anniversary (AK stands for Anyversary Kymco), and the X-Town (in 125 and 300 versions) were to be available on the German market from spring 2017.

In August 2022, another innovative model, the Kymco CV 3 550i three-wheel scooter, was launched in Germany. With an output of 37.5 kW (51 hp), it should be able to reach speeds of up to 158 km/h. It is powered by a liquid-cooled two-cylinder four-stroke engine with four-valve technology and intake manifold injection. Other features include cruise control and heated hand grips, although it does not have the flat step-through typical of scooters.
