Overview KTM

KTM Engine-Fahrzeugbau KG, an Austrian company, was known for manufacturing mopeds and scooters as well as bicycles and motorbikes. It was founded in 1934 and started mass producing motorbikes 20 years later in 1954, achieving many triumphs in motorsport. Unfortunately, the company had to file for bankruptcy in 1991 and was split up a year later in 1992. While KTM Sportmotorcycles GmbH, now known as Pierer Mobility, took over motorbike production, bicycle manufacturing was continued by KTM Fahrrad GmbH.

KTM model history

Scooters have always played a central role at KTM. in 1955, the up-and-coming motorbike factory presented its first scooter, the Mirabell, which was named after the famous Lock Mirabell in Salzburg. This new model was highly praised by the press. In keeping with the name, which means "admirable and beautiful", the scooter met the aesthetic demands of the time and was considered modern and elegant.

in 1957, KTM expanded the family with the "Mecky" moped scooter. Although KTM had previously mainly used Sachs engines, which were manufactured under licence by Rotax, the Mecky engine was a completely in-house development from Mattighofen - the first self-developed KTM engine in its history. in 1960, Mecky was replaced by the Ponny model. This scooter was characterised by design elements such as tail fins, Whitewall Tyre tyres and twin headlights reminiscent of American cars. The design was so appealing that the German manufacturer Gritzner took over the model as the "KTM de Luxe" and became the market leader in Germany in 1961, selling a remarkable 14,000 units. After a total of 40,000 Ponny scooters had been sold, the successor model Ponny II was launched on the market. This model, which was produced almost unchanged for 26 years, was also sold internationally under various brand names.

The production of scooters was later resumed and KTM launched several scooters on the market. Today, KTM even has an e-scooter in its programme.
