Overview BMW
BMW Motorrad is part of the BMW Group and represents its motorbike and scooter segment. Originally founded in 1916 as Bayerische Flugzeugwerke (BFW) in Munich, the initial focus was on aircraft engines. In 1917, the company was renamed Bayerische Motoren Werke GmbH and a year later became a stock corporation. From 1923, BMW expanded its portfolio to include motorbikes and in 1928 cars were added. Today, the motorbike division contributes around 2% of BMW's total earnings.
In Germany, BMW is the leading manufacturer of high-capacity motorbikes and maxi scooters. At the beginning of 2023, 631,421 BMW motorbikes were registered in Germany, accounting for 12.9% of the market. in 2021, BMW had the largest market share in Germany with 23.1%, well ahead of Honda and KTM. Globally, BMW does not rank in the top 10 in terms of sales, similar to Ducati and Triumph Motorcycles.
