Overview APRILIA

APRILIA, founded shortly after the Second World War by Alberto Beggio as a bicycle factory, developed into a renowned motorbike manufacturer under the management of his son Ivano Beggio. Ivano expanded the business to include the production of small off-road motorbikes and mopeds such as the Colibri, Daniela and Packi. From the 1980s onwards, APRILIA's production focussed increasingly on two-wheelers, with all parts being manufactured by suppliers.

Over the following decades, APRILIA continuously expanded its range of enduro, trial and road motorbikes. An important development was the collaboration with the Austrian engine manufacturer Rotax in the 1980s. During this time, APRILIA's first scooter, the Amico, was also introduced, which turned out to be a bestseller.

In the 1990s, APRILIA launched the Scarabeo scooter, which stood out with its mix of retro design and modern lines. Other scooters such as the Leonardo were also developed. APRILIA achieved a significant breakthrough with the introduction of the V2 two-stroke road model RS 250, which was the last road-legal modern two-stroke over 125 cc until 2004.

Despite the steady expansion and development of larger motorbikes, APRILIA maintained its focus on scooters, including the introduction of the 50 cc "DiTech" two-stroke engine in 2000, which provided high performance with low fuel consumption and low emissions. To this day, APRILIA remains a major player in the world of motorbikes, scooters and maxi scooters. Renowned for its innovative designs and technologies.

In 2000, Ivano Beggio, owner of APRILIA, acquired Laverda and Moto Guzzi in order to reorganise these financially ailing companies. However, these takeovers led to APRILIA itself becoming financially unstable and facing bankruptcy. At the end of 2004, APRILIA was acquired by the Piaggio Group. Although competitor Ducati also showed interest, APRILIA became part of Europe's largest two-wheeler group. In addition to Piaggio, Vespa, Aprilia and Moto Guzzi, the Group's brands also include Laverda, Puch, Derbi and Gilera. The restructuring plan drawn up for APRILIA provided for the preservation of jobs and production facilities as well as the development and production of new models, particularly in the under-one-litre class.

Since the first Amico model in 1990, APRILIA has continuously developed new scooters and maxi-scooters. These include the Leonardo, Atlantic, Sportcity and other models. The current model is the SR GT with 125 or 200 cc.
