Conversion to 10" ZIP Rim front & rear
- at SIP Scootershop
This aesthetic rim update changes the appearance of a Vespa like hardly any other optical tuning. Sporty and contemporary, yet harmonious. As if the Vespa rolled off the production line like this. What's more, the tubeless rims improve riding safety.
Old lady - new look
At the end of the 1950s, Piaggio introduced aluminium Brake Drum on the Vespa GS150, the look of which remained in the production range until 2011. It is always the same look, always the same combination with ring rims. For some automatic scooters of the 90s, Piaggio came up with a new idea and separated the Brake Drum and Wheel Hub. While the Wheel Hub always had virtually the same mounting flange with a 5 x 86 mm bolt circle, different rims and rim centres were used to match the design of the vehicles.
Even when the PX received a disc brake update with a star-shaped "Brake Drum" at the front in the 90s, the rear remained untouched and therefore visually inconsistent. SIP now makes it possible to upgrade this familiar brake drum world.
So that these automatic PIAGGIO ZIP rims can be mounted on classic Vespas, SIP has special Wheel Hubs manufactured for the front and rear axles.
A simple, yet aesthetically outstanding and sporty update of the classic Vespa models at a technically high level.
The conversion to 10" ZIP rear Rim fits the following Vespa Models:
Vespa 125 VNA/VNB/150 VBA/VBB
Vespa 125 GT/GTR/TS/Super/150 GL/Sprint/V/Super/Rally
Vespa PX80-200E Lusso/'98/MY/T5/Cosa
LML Star 125-200 2T/4T
The conversion to ZIP Rim ET30 5/86 in detail
front
A 20 mm front Disc Brake from PIAGGIO/LML/GRIMECA is required. The Wheel Hub ET30 5/86 replaces the Brake Drum of the Vespa PX`98/MY/`11/LML Star Models or the classic GRIMECA Brake Drum. The Brake Disc and the desired Rim of type 2.50-10 ET30/86 are mounted on it.
rear
The rear conversion requires the SIP Drum Brake Seating, whose front counterpart is called Wheel Hub and the matching SIP Brake Drum. This combination replaces the classic rear Brake Drum. The desired Rim of type 2.50-10 ET30/86 is mounted on it.
The rear conversion requires the following parts:
Drum Brake Seating SIP part no. 24277430
Brake Drum SIP part no. 24277400
A rim of type 2.50-10 ET30 5/86 is also required at the front and rear:
Rim offset ET30, bolt circle 5/86 mm, centre hole Ø 46 mm for PIAGGIO ZIP II/SP/ZIP2000/Vespa ET2/ET4 50-150 Models or Rim star offset ET30, bolt circle 5/86 mm, centre hole Ø 46 mm
The SIP PORDOI rims are the eye-catcher par excellence. But rims from CRIMAZ or KR Automation also look good.
An alternative to the ZIP rims are the rim spiders of the same design ET30 5/86, which allow you to continue using the classic Vespa rims, such as the tubeless SIP 2.10 or 2.50 rims in 10" or 11" and still achieve the look of the spoked wheels.
Which tyres should I use?
The standard tyres for the 2.50-10 ET30 5/86 Rim are 100 and 110 mm wide tyres, but 120 and 130 mm tyres are also within the frame. Usual cross-sections are 80 and 90 percent, e.g. 100/80 - 10" tyres (like 3.00 - 10") and 100/90 - 10" tyres (like 3.50 - 10") are predestined.
As a general rule: flatter tyres (low profile) offer greater steering precision, but are less able to iron out bumps and vice versa.
Caution: The rolling circumference of your Tyre influences the overall ratio of your drive axle ..
Tyres | Tyre width | Circumference | Per cent |
3.00-10 | 76.2 mm | 1235 mm | -6 % |
3.50-10 | 88.9 mm | 1307 mm | 0 % |
100/80-10 | 100 mm | 1259 mm | -4 % |
100/90-10 | 100 mm | 1319 mm | 1 % |
Track, eccentricity and wheel contact point
With rims of the original size at the front and rear, the scooter is on track.
If wider rims with the same rim size are fitted at the front and rear, the scooter is also on track, but may be off-centre. Due to a lack of space in relation to the Fork or Clutch Cover, wide tyre conversions on Vespas are always carried out by widening to the left (in the direction of travel).
Those who follow motorbike technology often want a wider Tyre at the rear than at the front, which means that the front/rear rims must also be of different widths. This can result in a wheel contact point offset; for example, the front tyre is closer to the centre of the vehicle (ideal track) - the rear tyre is offset further from the centre to the left.
If you convert to a ZIP SP Rim (2.50 x 10 ET30) with the SIP Wheel Hub/Drum Brake Seating, the wheel contact point is offset in the same way as if you convert to a 2.50 x 10" ring rim. The wheel contact point sits approx. a few millimetres further to the left in the direction of travel. These deviations in the mm range are hardly noticeable when driving.
We recommend converting the front and rear wheels together so that the wheel alignment is achieved again. But this makes more than sense for visual reasons alone.
Customers ask - SIP answers
"Does a Wide Tyre Kit also fit on a Smallframe?"
Basically yes! However, the modifications to be made here are much more complex than for a PX Engine. For example, the Exhaust must be adapted and the Shock Absorber Seating relocated. If a Smallframe rider decides to carry out such a premier class conversion, all Wide Tyre Kits can be used!
