Gijón has a lot to offer
The coastal city with around 270,000 inhabitants is located on the Bay of Biscay and those who wish can arrive by boat and moor at El Musel harbour. Locals and tourists alike can relax and have fun on the long beaches just outside the city or in the park with its sculptures on Santa Catalina hill. In the city, traces of the Romans can be found in the Palacio de los Valdés , while the monumental Laboral de Gijón University dominates just outside the centre. There are plenty of hotels and a large campsite right by the sea should also appeal to many Vespisti. If you want to make the journey by Vespa, you will have to sit in the seat for around 1,900 kilometres, which is the distance from the centre of Germany (Kassel) to Gijón.
The hinterland and surrounding area offer a lot of nature and the Asturian Vespa clubs will organise various trips along the coast and to the biosphere reserves. From a culinary point of view, all participants will be spoilt by the exciting Asturian cuisine, which consists of dishes prepared without haste, on a low fire and almost without spices that could distort the natural flavours of their ingredients. Whether it's the "fabada asturiana" bean stew, the spicy "chorizo" sausage or fresh fish and seafood straight from the harbour, there are plenty of surprises for the palate. And when night falls in Gijón, the many bars, pubs and clubs are tempting. If you get bored in Gijón, it's your own fault.
Fun fact: In Germany and Austria, people still occasionally talk about the "shame of Gijón", because at the 1982 World Cup, the national teams from these two countries agreed a non-aggression pact in the group game against each other in order to reach the next round unscathed. Germany took a 1-0 lead after ten minutes, the perfect score. After that, both teams literally did nothing to change the score.
Anyone who misbehaves in Gijón will have to watch this "Game" in its entirety on replay ;)
