Airbag waistcoat for motorbike and scooter riders

An accident can often have more serious consequences for scooter or motorbike riders than for car drivers. Especially in collisions with other vehicles, the robust passenger cell and the many airbags in cars offer better protection. However, there are now also airbags for scooter and motorbike riders that are built into jackets or waistcoats, thus providing additional safety.

The development of airbags for scooter riders

The first generation of airbag clothing was connected to a rip cord on the motorbike or scooter: The airbag is triggered when the rider is thrown from the two-wheeler. This system seemed to involve cumbersome fiddling with the clothing and the connection to the vehicle. Therefore, the demand for wireless airbag controls was and still is high. In&Motion, a French company, developed a system about two years ago that uses GPS signals and recorded acceleration values to detect a fall and trigger the airbag accordingly. This system is used, for example, by the Italian manufacturer TUCANO URBANO in its waistcoat called "Airscud".

How does the Airscud waistcoat from TUCANO URBANO work?

The electronic airbag waistcoat developed by TUCANO URBANO combines maximum safety with maximum comfort for the rider. It contains a clever algorithm that analyses the acceleration and position of the driver 1000 times a second with the help of three accelerometers and three centrifugal force sensors together with the GPS sensor. In the event of an accident, the airbag cushion builds up the optimum pressure within less than 60 milliseconds to absorb the impact force, stabilise the wearer's body, prevent damage to the spine and protect the vital organs.

All the hardware and software is integrated into the waistcoat, so there is no need to attach sensors to the scooter or motorbike, nor is there any need for a connection between the waistcoat and the vehicle. The battery lasts approximately 25 hours and the waistcoat automatically switches to standby mode when not in use, deactivating immediately at the slightest movement. The AIRSCUD waistcoat is designed to be easily worn under any type of jacket. However, care must be taken to ensure that the airbag has enough space to inflate safely.

The In&Box control module

The control module In&box, which is necessary for the function of the airbag waistcoat, is installed in the back shell of the waistcoat. It is included in the scope of delivery and can be used immediately after the first start-up. To put the waistcoat into operation and keep it permanently functional, the In&box must be activated by becoming a member of In&motion(www.inemotion.com) and the "My In&box" app must be downloaded. There are two options to choose from: a purchase option ("Regular") and a leasing option ("Revolution"). Additional, chargeable functions such as Track and Adventure can be booked via the app for both options. All information on activation, cost overview and partner offers with an ADAC membership at: https://www.inemotion.com/myinemotion/de/moto-membership. The cost of membership is not included in the purchase price of the waistcoat.

The textile material of this waistcoat is cut rather small. It is recommended to order one size larger. The back length is 63 cm for size L / 50 IT. These waistcoats should not be worn by people who use a pacemaker or other electronic medical devices.
