High end crankshafts for reed-valve Vespa PX engines.

 

Thomas Dolischka from Austria has earned himself a good reputation amongst vintage scooter fans that goes well beyond the borders of the Alpine republic. In the idyllic quiet of the Vorarlberger Rhine valley he has created and realised many spectacular scooter projects and also conceived and produced well thought through special components for race use. He is especially renowned for his crankshafts, that he has been marketing following small runs of production, known as his 'Uncle -Tom-Crankshafts'.

These crankshafts were considered as well constructed and reliable but regrettably Thomas ended their production and these popular crankshafts were no longer available. As Thomas only halted production due to a lack of time and was later convinced of the quality of our SIP Performance crankshafts, he fortunately gave us the chance of re-continuing their manufacture. This opportunity to recommence the supply of these sought after items was gratefully accepted!

 

Specification and types

We have the Uncle Tom crankshafts available to suit three engine types: The original Vespa Largeframe engine casings - The original Vespa Smallframe engine casings – The QUATTRINI Vespa Smallframe engine casings

 

Installation of these crankshafts

Most versions of the Uncle Tom crankshafts are equipped with an unusually long con rod. To fit them correctly the engine casings will require modification and machining. The established rule is that 1mm of clearance around the crankshaft once fitted is sufficient for effective use. Before the engine cases are machined always check that there is enough material available for the modification. On Largeframe engines it is usually sufficient to machine the flywheel side of the crankcase open slightly and only remove the disc-valve sealing material in the larger half. The Vespa Smallframe engine casings also require the area between the cylinder base and crankcase to be rounded off, making room for the con rod.

 

Conclusion: High end crankshafts that offer the perfect opportunity to undertake lasting tuning measures in areas of the highest performance!
