The gear selector cruciform has one of the toughest jobs in the whole gear box. The gear selector cruciform is put in position within the desired gear cog on the output shaft every time you change gear and ensures that the power of the motor can be effectively transmitted through the desired gear, to the output shaft, and finally the rear wheel.

 

The intervals at which the cruciform should be replaced are determined by the mileage of the motor. The life of an average cruciform is usually over after 10-12000 km or 6-7500 miles. Broken or incorrect selector boxes or rods, wrongly assembled output shaft assemblies, or badly adjusted gear cables all shorten the life of an average cruciform quite drastically. This leads to the gears not staying in position and in a worst case scenario create much more extensive damage within your motor. For this reason the cruciform should be replaced during every major service of your motor.

 

We have a number of various gear selector cruciforms available, catering for different price-classes, for a variety of demands, produced by several manufacturers.

  • PIAGGIO: The finest available for many years, regrettably in recent times with inconsistent quality issues.
  • FA: Their cruciforms are visually identical to the better PIAGGIO made items of old.
  • CIF: Noticeably well produced and finished cruciform type.
  • CRIMAZ: Their cruciforms are produced using a special steel alloy (16NCD12), vacuum formed and tempered. The surface has a certified hardness of HRC 58-60. Its design was conceived to ease and improve the gear-selection properties. These items are slightly larger than standard so be prepared for modifications during fitting.
  • MJ9: This cruciform is dimensioned identically to the original but sets itself apart with harder material properties, but also increased flexibility, making them a lot more durable. All MJ9 products are developed and produced in Germany.
  • for low-priced repair: Perfect for bargain hunters.
  • SIP-BFA: developed by the Italian high-tech manufacturer BFA for SIP. Tested in the 72PS SIP Sprinter and in the 56PS Jesco-Motors Sprinter. Harder can not come for a cruciform and the results were excellent. In our opinion the best way to select gears.
  • Polini: advertises with particularly successful material selection and perfect hardening of their cruciforms.

Conclusion: You cannot afford to save on this essential spare part. One should always be included in every toolbox.

 

SIP-TIP: Always check that you assemble the gear cogs correctly arranged and in the right order . Do not forget to measure the end float to be sure of the correct tolerances for your output shaft assembly. Check the cruciform and selector box for wear and always use fresh gear box oil!
