Saturday 17th March 2012 the Surrey Vintage Scooter Club held their second Vintage Vespa Run from Epsom Downs to Devils Dyke near Brighton. This event is run as a celebration of the first Vespa models leaving the Douglas factory in Kingswood, Bristol in March 1951. Last year’s very successful event attracted 11 entries, this year that number nearly doubled to 20, all riding pre 1960 125cc Vespas. The earliest entry being a 1949 bike and the latest was from 1959. There were even 4 Vespas that had entered the 1st Vintage Vespa Club run to Brighton in 1964.
The scooters left Epsom Downs just after 9am; they slowly wound their way along the narrow A and B roads of the route – the route takes in some lovely countryside and quaint little villages which, on these bikes, you get time to really appreciate.
After almost 3 hours the fog-covered hill of Devils Dyke came into view; the road up to the summit is a very steep one and definitely a first gear hill for all of these models. Of the 20 bikes that left Epsom Downs 17 of them made it to Devils Dyke where a very inviting restaurant had been booked for the riders to grab a well-earned drink, a bite to eat and a warm seat next to the lovely open fires.
All in all everyone had a great day in spite of the wet weather. There were so many positive comments about the event and everyone seems to be looking forward to next year’s run which is on 16th March 2013. Our thanks go to the event sponsors NGK Sparkplugs and the Veteran Vespa Club, also to the goodie bag sponsors Rock Oil, AutoGlym, Footman James, SIP Scootershop, Piaggio UK, Adams Aviation, Putoline and VE UK.
