In many magazine reviews, the journalists have been amazed by the boost in performance delivery, due to the innovative technology employed within the J.Costa variomatic unit. With the 'EVO 2' version, not only are the roller weights optimised to suit each particular engine, but also the backing plate has received a special anti-frictional coating to improve efficiency and prolong the service-life of the weights! This design of variator uses gliding weights, instead of rolling types, which facilitate the variomatic to open linearly, which has proved to be a very simple but effective technological development! Its linear design is the secret of the 'turbo effect' provided by these pulleys. Compared to original items the J.Costa units offer a shorter transmission ratio at lower revs, which leads to a quicker acceleration. Simultaneously, when the weights have reached the end of their travel (pulley fully opened), they also possess a taller ratio at higher revs, providing an increase in top speed.
This variomatic assembly is, apart from the 2008 version, delivered without a cover as the original item does the job perfectly! Due to the special graphite coating of the roller ramps on the new pulley the original cover should be thoroughly cleaned and freed from all oil and grease. The racing version includes two different sets of pulley weights to enable essential fine-tuning.
EVO 2 variomatic cover
The EVO 2 version of this variomatic pulley system was the first in the series to include a specially coated variomatic cover as part of the design. This helps reduce unwanted friction and also prolongs roller-weight life.
