Clutches are one of the most, if not the most, important components in any motor as their function is to ensure an adequate and effective transfer of the motors power between the crankshaft and the gearbox. To transfer greater amounts of motor power, more friction needs to be available within the mechanism of the clutch. Stronger clutch springs create more frictional pressure, more frictional plates lead to a greater frictional area. All clutch plates can be combined with all differing strengths of clutch springs suitable for their particular type of engine.
Most of our clutches are made by the long established traditional Italian clutch makers NEWFREN and SURFLEX. They have both been producing original clutches for VESPAs since the 1950ies.
The smaller clutch with an outer diameter of 108mm and an inner diameter of 96mm is the standard original PIAGGIO item and was used in every VESPA with 125 or 150cc, between the years of 1961 and 1994 (except the GS, T5 and COSA Mk1 VESPA models). Older models differ in that the friction plates are connected to the inner part of the clutch and not, as with later models, the clutch basket. The clutches are available with the primary drive cogs in three sizes (with 20, 21 and 22 teeth). They are also completely interchangeable between the relevant VESPA models engines, depending on the use of the correct thickness of distance washer, to ensure correct alignment with the secondary drive. The friction plates are also interchangeable, according to clutch type. This clutch unit assembly includes six springs and three friction plates.
The larger clutch, with an outer diameter of 115 and an inner diameter of 108mm, are the original PIAGGIO standard items in the premier division of VESPA large frame models: GS150/GS160, SS180, both Rally models, PX200/PE200 till 1994, VESPA T5 and last but not least the first version of the COSA 200. The clutches produced since the VESPA Rally models are interchangeable with all subsequently produced VESPA large frame motors clutches. The larger dimensions ensure grater frictional area. This clutch assembly includes six springs for the GS and Rally 180 models, seven for all other models in combination with the usual three friction plates.
We recommend clutches with hardened springs and at least four friction plates for tuned motors. Before assembly the friction plates should be left overnight to soak in gearbox oil (SAE30).
Conclusion: Ideal for standard motors. An exchange or renewal is recommendable during every major service or rebuild.
SIP-TIP: A new woodruff key, castle nut and castle nut locking washer are necessary while servicing your clutch. Stronger springs and friction plates are highly recommended for tuning projects. Do not forget to order SAE30 gearbox oil for an overnight soak of the friction plates prior to assembly. The smaller PX clutch with the outer diameter of 108mm can also be used in the VESPA Sprint, Sprint Veloce, GTR, GT, T5, T4, GL, VNA and VNB models if the correct spacer washer is used (3mm thickness Art.-Nr.11351960) also available at our shop
