The shock absorber is the central element of the chassis and a safety-relevant component. If it is either defective or if a shock absorber is used that does not correspond with the riding style, this can lead to nasty surprises. Shock absorbers that are too soft can break easily or give you the fright of your life in curves or at high speeds.
A defective shock absorber has a negative impact on the drive comfort and safety. This becomes evident either if the spring only works when it is put under pressure (excessively fast extension), or through obvious traces of fluid loss around the damping rod. HELPFUL HINT: The first prototype Vespa scooters rear suspension consisted of a simple block of rubber. The ride was first improved in 1948 with the inclusion of a separate spring and damper system with the Vespa 125 V1-15T/V30-33/Hoffmann A/B/C/ACMA->70910/VM/VN1T->06000/VU1 models. An integrated spring and damper unit was introduced in 1950 with the Vespa 125 VN1T 06000->/VN2/ACMA 70191->150 VL/VB1/GS 150 VS1-5/T1-T3/VGL1T models.
