Many have attempted this monster conversion and come unstuck somewhere along the line due to some technical problem or other. This made us especially proud to be able to present the next step in scooter suspension and wheel technology at the 2010 Ried custom show with our custom Super Sport VESPA 'Glorious Basterd'.
Many weeks of research and development along with numerous prototypes were necessary to be able to provide a more conventional solution to the wheel size enigma for the VESPA community as a whole. Problems encountered such as a correct alignment of the wheels, good steering characteristics and maintaining a minimum distance from the frame were solved with flying colours! The result is a noticeably improved suspension performance through an improved ground clearance and optimal straight-line stability. In addition, 12'' wheel conversions are THE absolute eye-catcher and on the practical side, provide a higher overall gear ratio. This conversion involves modification to both the front and the rear of your suspension/ wheel setup!
Please note: Your exhaust and front mudguard will also require slight modification in order to fit, according to type.
For the front end we have, according to model, converted steering columns available. The length of both the steering column and the lower fork section, the steering range limiter and the steering lock recess have all been modified to suit. The shock absorbers available for the VESPA PX 80-150 X/ P200E/ PX80-200E/ EFL/ T5 models can be used with this steering column conversion kit. A special shock absorber mounting will be necessary though due to the original being 16mm out of line. A mechanically driven speedometer will no longer be possible due to the transmission ratio being completely incompatible. To remedy this we also have the SIP digital speedo unit available! The assembly kit, which includes all fastenings etc., is not included in the delivery. A new wheel/ tyre and brake assembly are also necessary in order to complete the setup.
A PX motor will be necessary for the rear end 12'' conversion. If you are going to build a Lotus you do not want to put a Reliant Robin motor in it! The brake drum is based around a 30x47x6mm output shaft oil seal, so motors with internal oil seals are automatically compatible. PX motors with a 27mm oil seal seating require replacement of the existing output shaft oil seal by a larger 30x47x6mm dimensioned item. The motor also needs the wider section tyre conversion (motor shifted to the right) to accept the 12'' items. These include the spacer necessary to compensate for the front and rear wheel being out of line.
SIP TIP: Do not forget to order the front wheel, tyre, brake calliper and disc separately to complete the setup. The installation kit has all the parts necessary included for this job. We recommend on front and rear the tyre size of 120/70-12.
